Our client, a technology company supporting municipal utilities, is seeking an experienced Cloud Operations Consultant to support, maintain, and advance its AWS-based containerized application environment.
This is a hands-on consulting opportunity focused on production support, infrastructure modernization, and the continued migration of legacy applications into Kubernetes.
The ideal candidate brings strong production experience with AWS EKS, Kubernetes, and Helm charts, along with practical knowledge of supporting legacy PHP applications running with PHP-FPM and Apache.
The consultant will work closely with an established cloud engineering team, helping manage day-to-day operational needs while advancing infrastructure modernization initiatives.
Support, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve production and QA containerized environments running on AWS.
Manage and enhance Kubernetes workloads using AWS EKS and Helm charts.
Create, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize Helm charts for application deployments.
Assist with migrating legacy applications from Ubuntu-based servers into containerized environments.
Troubleshoot application and infrastructure issues involving PHP, PHP-FPM, Apache, and related configurations.
Support MySQL databases and ongoing modernization initiatives involving AWS Aurora.
Maintain and improve deployment processes and dynamic QA/staging environments.
Investigate issues involving application dependencies, configuration, networking, database connectivity, and caching services.
Contribute to automation and operational improvements using Linux, shell scripting, and AWS services.
Collaborate with cloud engineers and application developers to identify issues, implement solutions, and maintain reliable environments.
Communicate progress, technical challenges, and blockers proactively.
Take ownership of assigned operational and project work with minimal foundational training.
Approximately 35+ years of relevant hands-on experience in Cloud Operations, DevOps, infrastructure engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Demonstrated experience supporting containerized applications in production Kubernetes environments.
Strong hands-on experience with AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS).
Extensive experience creating, modifying, deploying, and troubleshooting Helm charts.
Experience supporting and troubleshooting applications running on AWS infrastructure.
Practical experience with MySQL and/or AWS Aurora.
Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills, including familiarity with Ubuntu environments.
Experience with Bash or other shell scripting for automation and operational tasks.
Ability to diagnose issues across application configuration, container orchestration, and underlying infrastructure.
Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a distributed engineering team.
Demonstrated ability to take ownership, communicate blockers, and deliver solutions without unnecessary complexity.
Containerizing legacy applications, particularly those written in PHP.
Supporting and troubleshooting PHP-FPM and Apache configurations.
Experience with traditional LAMP application environments.
Migrating applications from virtual machines or traditional servers into Kubernetes.
Experience with Redis or Valkey caching technologies.
Familiarity with AWS CodeBuild and Bitbucket.
Supporting dynamically provisioned QA or staging environments.
Experience modernizing established application environments while maintaining production stability.
Important: This is not a PHP application development position. The consultant should understand how PHP applications operate within containerized environments and be comfortable troubleshooting related configuration and infrastructure issues.
The consultant is expected to become productive quickly and begin reducing the operational workload of the existing cloud engineering team within the first 3060 days.
Successful performance includes independently handling meaningful production and QA support work, troubleshooting containerized application issues, contributing to legacy application migrations, and advancing infrastructure initiatives.
