Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Full-Stack Developer with deep, hands-on Python expertise and strong React experience to independently own features across a modern cloud-based platform.

This role will involve substantial Python backend development, which represents one of the most technically demanding areas of the project. The successful candidate must be able to enter an existing Python codebase, solve complex backend problems, make sound technical decisions, and deliver production-quality services with minimal technical guidance.

The platform follows a three-tier architecture, with backend APIs built in Python/FastAPI, user-facing applications developed in React, and deployment within Microsoft Azure. You will work across the stack, from backend services and data models through frontend experiences supporting both a voter-facing application and administrative portal.

This is a senior, hands-on engineering role. You will be expected to independently own features from concept through production, contribute to architecture and engineering standards, and provide guidance to less experienced developers while remaining actively involved in development.

Core Responsibilities

• Take primary ownership of complex Python backend development, including technically challenging areas requiring independent problem-solving and sound implementation decisions.
• Design, build, troubleshoot, and maintain high-performance JSON APIs using Python and FastAPI.
• Develop secure and compliant backend functionality, including:
  • Authentication and validation workflows, including checksum algorithms.
  • PostgreSQL data access and configuration management.
  • Encryption and sensitive-data handling, including AES-256 and identity separation.
  • Third-party integrations such as email/webhook providers and telephony APIs.
• Build and maintain React single-page applications deployed through Azure Static Web Apps.
• Own complete features across backend services, APIs, relational data, and frontend experiences.
• Extend and customize frontend frameworks such as SurveyJS to support complex, domain-specific interactions.
• Develop internal tools using modern administrative frameworks such as Refine for configuration, reporting, and analysis.
• Collaborate on application and cloud architecture within a Microsoft Azure environment.
• Diagnose and resolve complex production issues across application layers.
• Make independent technical decisions and clearly communicate architectural and implementation trade-offs.
• Own features from conception through production with minimal technical guidance.
• Write clean, maintainable, scalable, and well-tested code.
• Mentor junior developers and contribute to engineering standards and best practices.

Core Requirements

Python / Backend Engineering

• 5–7+ years of professional software development experience in production environments.
• Strong, recent, hands-on production Python development experience. Python is a core requirement and a primary focus of this role.
• Demonstrated ability to independently design, build, troubleshoot, and maintain complex Python backend services.
• Production experience designing and building APIs in Python; FastAPI experience is strongly preferred.
• Ability to work effectively within an existing Python codebase and independently diagnose complex implementation and production issues.
• Strong understanding of backend engineering practices, including testing, error handling, maintainability, performance, and secure application development.
• Experience designing and consuming RESTful or JSON-based APIs.

Full-Stack Development

• Strong production experience with React and modern frontend development.
• Demonstrated experience working in decoupled frontend/backend architectures.
• Ability to independently own complete features across Python backend services, APIs, relational databases, and React applications.
• Strong PostgreSQL or comparable relational database experience, including schema design and query optimization.
• Experience integrating third-party APIs, services, or external systems.

Security & Engineering Practices

• Experience applying application security best practices, including authentication, authorization, encryption, secrets management, and sensitive-data handling.
• Ability to evaluate technical alternatives and make appropriate architectural and implementation trade-offs.
• Strong Linux, command-line, and Git workflow experience.
• Experience writing maintainable, testable production software and diagnosing issues across multiple application layers.

AI-Assisted Software Engineering

• Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools as part of the software development lifecycle.
• Demonstrated judgment regarding when and how to use AI versus traditional engineering approaches.
• Ability to review, validate, test, and troubleshoot AI-assisted code rather than relying on generated output without technical verification.
• Ability to guide less experienced developers in the effective and responsible use of AI development tools.

Professional & Collaboration Skills

• Autonomous technical decision-maker who can operate effectively with minimal supervision.
• Strong problem-solving skills, particularly when working through complex or unfamiliar technical issues.
• Self-starter with demonstrated experience taking features from concept through production.
• Ability to communicate technical decisions, risks, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfortable working in a lean, high-ownership environment where senior engineers remain hands-on.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor less experienced engineers and contribute to overall team effectiveness.
• Collaborative approach to architecture and engineering decisions while maintaining individual accountability for delivery.

Preferred / Bonus Experience

• Microsoft Azure, including Static Web Apps, App Services, and managed database services.
• Direct production experience with FastAPI.
• SurveyJS, Refine, or comparable frontend/admin frameworks.
• Third-party API, webhook, messaging, or telephony integrations.
• Encryption standards and secure system design.
• DevOps practices, including CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code.
• Experience working with additional programming languages beyond Python and JavaScript/TypeScript.

What Success Looks Like

The successful engineer will be able to take ownership of technically challenging Python work without requiring significant day-to-day technical supervision. They will be equally comfortable understanding an existing system, diagnosing difficult problems, designing appropriate solutions, and implementing production-quality code.

While this is a full-stack position requiring meaningful React capability, Python backend strength is essential to success in the role. Broad software engineering experience or expertise in another backend language does not replace the need for demonstrated, hands-on Python proficiency.

The engineer will combine that Python depth with full-stack ownership, sound technical judgment, effective use of AI-assisted development tools, and the ability to move independently from a business or technical requirement through a production solution.
