Regional Practice Leader – Wastewater Treatment Process Engineer

Our client, a leading architecture and engineering firm dedicated to helping communities thrive, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Regional Practice Leader – Wastewater Treatment Process Engineer to join their Treatment Practice. This key leadership role involves overseeing the planning, technical design, and process optimization of a wide array of wastewater treatment facilities for municipal and industrial clients. The ideal candidate will apply their deep technical knowledge, project management expertise, and dedication to sustainable infrastructure to support the health and growth of the communities our client serves.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to business development efforts, including proposal preparation, scope definition, and client presentations.

  • Engage directly with clients to understand needs, offer technical solutions, and build lasting relationships.

  • Manage the technical scope, budget, and schedule of process engineering components to ensure timely and high-quality deliverables.

  • Lead and execute complex process engineering design projects for water and wastewater treatment plants, covering all stages from master planning to detailed design.

  • Perform process modeling, mass balance calculations, and hydraulic analyses; develop design criteria, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).

  • Specify, select, and lay out equipment for various treatment technologies including activated sludge, biological nutrient removal, membrane bioreactors, filtration, and disinfection.

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and design staff to support their professional development.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation/control engineers, along with clients and operations personnel.

  • Support permitting, regulatory compliance, and agency coordination for water and wastewater projects.

  • Conduct site visits during design, construction, and commissioning to assist with process optimization and troubleshooting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 20+ years of progressive experience in water and/or wastewater process engineering within a consulting environment.

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

Technical Skills:

  • Proven expertise in water/wastewater treatment process design.

  • Proficiency in process modeling software (e.g., BioWin, GPS-X, WaterCAD, SewerCAD).

  • Strong skills in PFD and P&ID development.

  • Familiarity with design tools such as AutoCAD and Revit.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write technical reports and deliver presentations.

  • Effective interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships.

  • Strong leadership and team coordination abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Self-motivated and committed to delivering high-quality results.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE).

  • Broad experience across various water and wastewater treatment technologies for both municipal and industrial clients.

  • Proven success in business development, including securing new projects and building client relationships.

  • Active involvement and leadership in professional organizations such as AWWA or WEF.

  • Recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) in specific treatment technologies (e.g., MBR, biosolids, filtration, disinfection).

  • In-depth knowledge of water and wastewater regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.
