Job Title: Staff Accountant
Location: SSAB Iowa & Value Plus
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Position Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Staff Accountant to support the financial operations of SSAB Iowa and Value Plus. This role will focus on cost accounting, inventory validation, reporting, and financial analysis to ensure accurate and timely data for strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
Verify receipt of all raw materials (e.g., scrap, alloys, fluxes, electrodes, packaging) used in production
Ensure consumption data is accurate and aligned with mill systems; conduct test counts for inventory validation
Analyze cycle counts and test counts to recommend adjustments to the general and sub-ledger
Reconcile scrap receiving reports against ledger systems
Review and input raw material adjustments from purchasing and receiving teams into mill systems
Investigate alloy cost variances (pricing, consumption, mix) and document findings
Work with consignment vendors to verify inventory usage and participate in physical counts
Track obsolete inventory sent to consigners
Prepare monthly account reconciliations and weekly deposits of miscellaneous collections
Generate weekly and monthly reports on cost consumption and variance analysis for senior leadership
Conduct ad hoc reporting, journal entries, and financial analysis as needed
Support accounting for Cut-to-Length facilities, including inventory cost review, production metrics, and profitability analysis
Review and process employee expense reports
Assist with R&D tax credit documentation and purchase requisition reviews
Maintain and coordinate Capital and Non-Capital Work Orders for facility projects
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
Experience & Skills:
Experience in manufacturing accounting preferred
Strong knowledge of accounting practices and inventory control
Analytical mindset with attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and other Office tools
Working Conditions:
Primarily office-based with standard equipment use
Some physical activity required (e.g., filing, lifting up to 30 lbs)
Visual and auditory capability needed for group and individual communication
Schedule & Travel:
Monday–Friday, day shift with occasional off-hours
Minimal travel (<1%)
Supervisory Responsibilities:
