Job Description

RCS Staffing has an immediate need for an Engineer III – Protection & Controls in Atlanta, GA/Fort Mill, SC. This is a full-time direct-hire assignment with our client. This position offers a competitive package including benefits, vacation, and holidays.

Overview of YOUR role as an Engineer III – Protection & Controls

Provide protection and control (P&C) engineering, design, technical support, and project oversight for transmission substations, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and solar collector substations. You will deliver safe, cost-effective, high-quality engineering services while acting as a discipline lead, performing responsible-charge engineering, and supporting project schedules, budgets, proposals, and estimates.

As an Engineer III – Protection & Controls YOU will:

• Apply advanced P&C engineering fundamentals to utility substation and transmission line equipment.
• Design protection schemes for bus, line, capacitor, and transformer equipment, including associated relay settings.
• Develop SCADA communication system designs.
• Lead engineers and designers in a technical leadership capacity.
• Apply project management principles to support scheduling, budgeting, and deliverables.
• Create P&C project scopes, cost estimates, budgets, and schedules.
• Read, interpret, design, and engineer P&C drawings through 500kV, including one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, settings, relays, and SCADA.
• Perform engineering studies—fault current, coordination, voltage drop, insulation coordination, etc.
• Conduct calculations and studies using client-specified software and standards.
• Review designs for accuracy, appearance, and compliance with customer standards.
• Mentor junior engineers and support designers/drafters.
• Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, contractors, consultants, suppliers, and clients.
• Visit project sites, troubleshoot P&C issues, and adjust designs as needed during construction.
• Manage project schedules and budgets.

YOU are the ideal Engineer III – Protection & Controls candidate if you have:

• 5–7 years of experience as a practicing engineer.
• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited engineering program, or acceptable NCEES evaluation, or a graduate engineering degree from a school with an EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate program.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain one within one year.
• Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate engineering alternatives and propose sound recommendations.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, lead team members, and meet deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

It’s a BONUS if you have:

• Experience working in the utility industry.
• Prior responsible-charge P&C engineering experience on transmission substation projects.
