Job Description

Business Development Manager (Field Intelligence)

Location: North Carolina (statewide territory; frequent in-market travel)
Work Type: Full-time, exempt | Field-based with office time as needed
Compensation: $125,000 base + performance bonus + growth opportunities

Why Join Us

Starr Electric is a respected commercial/industrial electrical contractor with deep roots across North Carolina. This role is designed for a builder, someone who creates opportunity in the field, cultivates partnerships, and brings back market intelligence that shapes where we go next.

Role Overview

Own the frontline of growth. You’ll spend most of your time in the market—meeting GCs, owners, developers, and facility leaders; uncovering upcoming work; and translating those insights into qualified pursuits and strategic relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hunt, don’t sit: Maintain a high in-person cadence with GCs, owners, developers, and industrial/facility contacts; attend pre-bid meetings, walk-throughs, and industry events.
  • Market intelligence: Capture VOC/competitor intel (pricing trends, schedules, delivery risks, preferred subs) and brief leadership to inform bids and go/no-go.
  • Pipeline creation: Build and manage a robust pipeline of qualified pursuits (design-bid-build, design-build, service, TI, special projects).
  • Account strategy: Expand share-of-wallet within target GCs and owners; secure preferred-vendor/MSA positions and early engagement with preconstruction.
  • Partner ecosystem: Develop relationships with manufacturers, distributors, and specialty partners to open doors and co-market.
  • Collaboration: Work with estimating/precon to position wins (scope strategy, alternates, VE ideas, win themes); ensure CRM hygiene and stage accuracy.
  • Forecasting & reporting: Provide accurate forecasts and pursuit summaries; track conversion and cycle times.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5–10+ years in business development, key accounts, or outside sales within electrical/MEP/GC or adjacent construction markets.
  • Proven record opening doors with GCs/owners and converting pursuits into revenue.
  • Strong command of NC market dynamics (Triangle/Triad/Charlotte/East).
  • Working knowledge of preconstruction/estimating workflows; ability to discuss scope, alternates, and VE.
  • CRM proficiency (Salesforce, HubSpot, or similar); disciplined pipeline management.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Valid driver’s license; regular in-state travel
