Generator Technician – $25–$35/hour

Location: Indianapolis, IN
Job Type: Full-time, Hourly (Non-Exempt)
Reports To: Service Manager (Generator)

Key Responsibilities

  • Installation & Setup:
    • Install new generators, ensuring proper electrical connections, fuel supply, and exhaust systems.
    • Perform load testing to verify the generator's capacity to handle required electrical loads.
  • Scheduled Maintenance:
    • Conduct routine maintenance checks on generators, including inspecting and servicing engines, alternators, and other components.
    • Replace worn or damaged parts such as filters, belts, hoses, and batteries.
    • Change oil and coolant, and maintain proper fuel levels.
  • Repairs & Troubleshooting:
    • Diagnose and repair generator malfunctions, electrical issues, and mechanical failures.
    • Troubleshoot control systems, voltage regulators, and other electrical components.
    • Perform load bank testing to evaluate generator performance under various conditions.
  • Safety Compliance:
    • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and guidelines when working on generators to prevent accidents and hazards.
    • Properly dispose of hazardous materials, such as used oil and old filters.
  • Documentation:
    • Maintain detailed records of maintenance and repair activities, including parts used and work performed.
    • Generate service reports and provide recommendations for upgrades or replacements when necessary.
  • Customer Interaction:
    • Communicate with clients or on-site personnel to explain the maintenance or repair process and provide cost estimates.
    • Address customer concerns and inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Emergency Response:
    • Be available for on-call duty to respond to generator emergencies and power outages.
    • Quickly troubleshoot and repair generators to restore power.

Qualifications

  • Current driver’s license
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certification in generator maintenance or a related field is often preferred
  • Strong mechanical and electrical skills
  • Knowledge of various generator types and models
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools and equipment
  • Ability to read technical manuals and schematics
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to safety
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Physical fitness and the ability to lift heavy equipment
