This role offers the opportunity to lead a team of seven highly skilled engineers while remaining hands-on in architecture, programming and development, of real-time embedded systems.
The team is responsible for developing a complex control platform, built on high-performance Xilinx System on Chip device. With a control system operating some functions at ~100 µs (microsecs), the system ensures precise, high-speed power regulation across industrial applications.
This is a leadership role with a 50/50 split between technical expertise and team development, reporting into global Agile leadership while working closely with the Hawke’s Bay-based R&D team.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and mentor a team of embedded software engineers, ensuring high standards in development and system architecture
- Oversee real-time, software for power electronics applications, including UPS and energy storage solutions
- Guide development of C++, Embedded Linux, and RTOS software
- Balance Agile methodologies with practical engineering delivery – driving process improvement while adapting to real-world R&D demands
- Work cross-functionally with hardware, control, and quality teams to deliver high-performance solutions
- Maintain a hands-on technical approach, contributing to key architectural decisions and troubleshooting complex system behaviour
What You’ll Bring
- Proven team leadership experience in embedded software development (ideally leading teams of 5+ engineers)
- Expertise in real-time, embedded C++ and Linux development (RTOS, system-on-chip)
- Understanding of power electronics applications (UPS, drives, solar, EV charging) – though flexibility exists on this requirement
- Experience working with Xilinx SoC or similar high-performance processing platforms
- Strong problem-solving and architectural capabilities, with an ability to bridge hardware and software integration
- Familiarity with Matlab Simulink code generation or FPGA design principles is an advantage
- A collaborative mindset, able to lead a strong, experienced team in a high-stakes, fast-paced development environment
Why Join This Opportunity?
- Take on a senior leadership role while remaining hands-on in cutting-edge software development
- Work in a high-performance R&D team solving complex engineering challenges
- Competitive salary package (~approx $200k total comp, $175k base)
- Based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand – flexible work available but primarily an on-site leadership role
