Description:
We are seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to support facilities design and construction projects at Norfolk Naval Station, VA. This role serves as the subject matter expert for all geotechnical and pavement engineering activities across a diverse portfolio of military construction (MILCON), renovation, and maintenance projects.
Responsibilities/skills:
• Provide independent geotechnical engineering support, services, and consultation for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of facilities — including MILCON, demolition, renovation, and space utilization projects
• Collaborate with project stakeholders, engineers, and architects to ensure coordination and integration across disciplines
• Coordinate all activities in the geotechnical and pavements engineering discipline in accordance with applicable UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria)
• Support in-house design projects and Request for Proposals (RFPs); review designs including specs, drawings, and cost estimates prepared by consultant Architecture/Engineering (A/E) firms
• Develop final working drawings using AutoCAD; monitor active construction to ensure geotechnical requirements are met per contract plans and specifications
• Review contractor submittals including shop drawings, material samples, and other design-related items
• Interface with construction contractors and designers to resolve problems or unforeseen conditions arising during construction
• Recommend corrective and preventative measures as needed; ensure changes in cost, scope, schedule, or design are properly coordinated and approved
• Analyze geotechnical data to evaluate foundation shear strength, settlement potential, and bearing capacity for various soil conditions
• Determine testing parameters for soil conditions to inform structural foundation design
• Conduct field visits to project sites for scoping, design evaluation, and construction inspection
• Inspect existing soil and foundation conditions to identify potential issues and recommend remediation
• Consult with clients and stakeholders to gather information required for project scoping, failure analysis, and remedial planning
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering from an ABET-accredited program, supplemented by substantial hands-on facilities geotechnical design experience.• U.S. Citizenship required; must be able to obtain and maintain a NACI/CAC• Active PE license (Professional Engineer) in geotechnical or civil/structural engineering with geotechnical emphasis required
• Minimum 10 years of professional geotechnical engineering experience in code-compliant facilities design, including new construction and renovation
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to convey technical concepts to diverse, non-technical audiences
• Highly self-directed with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines independently
