Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and client-focused Roadway Design Engineer to support the planning and design of transportation infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will have experience with roadway geometry, drainage, traffic design, and regulatory compliance, with strong technical skills and a collaborative mindset. Key Responsibilities
- Assist in preliminary engineering, including conceptual and schematic roadway design.
- Support planning and design activities for roadway projects involving:
- Geometric layout
- Hydraulic systems
- Pavement design
- Intersections
- Lighting
- Traffic control and signage
- Prepare detailed design calculations and construction documents in compliance with local, state (ODOT), and federal regulations.
- Develop Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and Traffic Control plans and specifications.
- Prepare contract documents including project specifications, quantity take-offs, and cost estimates.
- Assist with permitting processes and regulatory compliance at the local, county, state, and federal levels.
- Guide junior staff on technical objectives, critical design elements, and quality standards.
- Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and review agencies to ensure project success.
Required Competencies
- Technical Expertise:
- Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Experience with MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer is preferred
- Understanding of stormwater design principles and roadway drainage practices
- Familiarity with ODOT and local transportation design standards
- Problem Solving & Judgment:
- Ability to make sound engineering decisions independently
- Capable of applying experience and best practices to a wide variety of project types
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable interacting with internal staff, external clients, and regulatory agencies
- Ability to lead or mentor junior engineers on key project components
- Willingness to collaborate with senior staff on complex or novel technical challenges
- Project Management:
- Strong time management with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines
- Attention to detail and accountability for quality work
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Minimum of 3 years of roadway design experience
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
- Experience with ODOT and/or local standards and specifications
- AutoCAD Civil 3D proficiency required
- Familiarity with MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer is a plus
