Job Description

Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE)

A leading manufacturer of industrial cooling systems is seeking a Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE). In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that all purchased materials, components, and outsourced fabrication services used in the production of Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers (ACHE) meet company quality requirements, applicable industry standards, and ASME/API customer specifications.

This position proactively manages supplier performance, conducts audits, resolves quality issues, and drives continuous improvement across the supply chain.

Key Responsibilities

Supplier Qualification & Development

  • Evaluate and approve new suppliers for compliance with ASME Section VIII, API 661, API 660, ISO 9001, and customer-specific requirements.

  • Conduct supplier audits (process, product, and quality system audits) and develop corrective action and follow-up plans.

  • Monitor supplier performance metrics (PPM, OTD, NCR trends) and lead supplier improvement initiatives.

Incoming Material & Fabrication Quality Assurance

  • Review supplier documentation including MTRs, WPS/PQRs, NDE reports, dimensional reports, coating certifications, and pressure test records.

  • Verify supplied materials (tubes, fins, headers, structural steel, fans, gearboxes, motors) meet technical and mechanical specifications for ACHE manufacturing.

  • Support receiving inspection activities and develop inspection plans for critical components.

Nonconformance Management & Corrective Actions

  • Lead root cause analysis using 5-Why, Fishbone/Ishikawa, and other problem-solving methodologies.

  • Issue and manage Supplier Corrective Action Requests (SCARs) to ensure timely and effective resolution.

  • Partner with engineering, procurement, and production teams to disposition nonconforming materials.

Product and Process Quality Support

  • Participate in design reviews, supplier kick-off meetings, and pre-production / pre-inspection meetings.

  • Support qualification of special processes including welding, brazing, NDE, coatings, and machining.

  • Review and approve supplier ITPs, QCPs, WPS/PQRs, NDE procedures, coating procedures, and test plans.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Ensure supplier documentation packages (CMTRs, hydrostatic test records, coating DFT reports, weld maps, NDE reports) meet project and code requirements.

  • Support customer and third-party inspections at supplier facilities (TPI, Authorized Inspector for ASME work).

  • Maintain supplier quality records and support internal and external audit activities.

Safety-Sensitive Position

This position involves safety-sensitive job duties and is designated as safety-sensitive under applicable state regulations.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field (preferred).

  • 3–7 years of experience in supplier quality, manufacturing quality, welding, metallurgy, or heavy fabrication — preferably within ACHE, pressure vessels, or similar industries.

Technical Skills

  • Working knowledge of ASME Section VIII Division 1, API 661, API 660, TEMA, and applicable NDE methods.

  • Experience with welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, SAW) and ability to interpret WPS, PQR, and welder qualifications.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, BOMs, ITPs, and material specifications.

  • Strong understanding of metallurgy, coatings, heat treatment, pressure testing, and fabrication processes.

  • Proficiency with root cause analysis and quality management systems (ISO 9001).

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication and negotiation abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple suppliers and competing priorities.

  • Detail-oriented, analytical, and proactive problem solver.

  • Willingness to travel up to 30% to supplier locations.

Supervisory Responsibility

This role includes supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Combination of office and supplier/manufacturing environments.

  • Use of standard office equipment.

  • When in manufacturing environments, required use of PPE including hearing protection, safety glasses with side shields, and OSHA-compliant safety footwear.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods, occasionally move throughout the facility, and lift up to 25 pounds.

  • Occasional exposure to non-temperature-controlled environments with noise, dust, and typical fabrication shop conditions.

Schedule

  • Full-time position, Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

Travel

  • Approximately 30% travel to supplier sites.
