  Job Description: Supervising Veterinarian Reports To: Hospital Administrator and/or Owner Position Summary: The Supervising Veterinarian is a full-time position responsible for the medical direction, quality of care, and clinical performance of the hospital. This individual provides advanced veterinary medical care, mentors the veterinary staff, helps to ensure adherence to established protocols and best practices, and actively participates in the strategic planning and development of the hospital. The Supervising Veterinarian serves as a key member of the leadership team and is accountable for maintaining a high standard of veterinary medicine and a positive work environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Clinical Practice: Perform a full range of veterinary medical services, including examinations, diagnoses, treatments, surgeries, and preventative care, exhibiting a high level of clinical proficiency and judgment. This includes emergency and urgent care situations as needed.
• Medical Leadership: Provide medical leadership and guidance to all veterinary technicians, assistants, and other clinical staff. This includes regular rounds, case discussions, and mentorship opportunities.
• Protocol Development & Implementation: Assist with development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive medical protocols, procedures, and guidelines consistent with current veterinary standards of care and hospital philosophy.
• Quality Assurance: Assist with implementation and monitoring of quality assurance programs to ensure a consistently high standard of medical care. This includes reviewing medical records, conducting audits, and identifying areas for improvement.
• Staff Supervision & Training: Provide feedback regarding the performance of veterinary staff, assisting with regular performance evaluations, professional development opportunities, and addressing any performance issues with management team.
• Case Management: Manage complex or challenging cases, consulting with specialists as needed and ensuring appropriate documentation and follow-up.
• Client Communication: Maintain effective and compassionate communication with clients, providing clear explanations of diagnoses, treatment plans, and prognosis.
• Inventory Management: Collaborate with medical staff and management to maintain adequate levels of medical supplies and equipment.
• Continuing Education: Maintain a commitment to ongoing professional development, attending continuing education courses and staying abreast of advancements in veterinary medicine (all CE is paid by employer).
• Compliance: Participate in compliance protocols with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations, as well as hospital policies and procedures.
• Strategic Planning: Participate in the development and implementation of hospital strategic goals and objectives.
• Emergency Response: Participate in and potentially lead emergency preparedness and response activities. Qualifications:
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary school.
• Valid and unrestricted veterinary license in the state of Tennessee.
• Minimum of 7 years of clinical practice experience.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience in staff supervision and training.
• Strong diagnostic and surgical skills.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and client management skills.
• Proficiency in veterinary practice management software (currently using Avimark).
• Board certification in a veterinary specialty preferred (e.g., Surgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency & Critical Care).
• Bilingual is a plus (Spanish) Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift and restrain animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and stoop for extended periods.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced and occasionally stressful environment.
