About the Role

Leap Recruitment Partners is proud to be recruiting for a Director of Construction Risk & Commercial Property Underwriting on behalf of our client. This role is central to shaping and maintaining underwriting guidelines for commercial property while serving as the technical referral point to the organization’s profit centers. The successful candidate will be a people-focused leader who not only directs underwriting strategy but also invests in the professional growth and development of their team. You’ll ensure underwriting practices are aligned with profitability goals, industry regulations, and evolving market conditions, while proactively identifying opportunities for growth within the commercial portfolio. This role requires a balance of strategic insight, technical expertise, and leadership skills to collaborate effectively across actuarial, claims, and risk services teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee all activities related to commercial property underwriting, with a focus on construction risk.

  • Identify trends and opportunities to drive profitable growth within the commercial property portfolio.

  • Develop, implement, and refine underwriting guidelines and wordings.

  • Provide technical guidance and act as a referral point for underwriters and other stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners (actuarial, claims, risk services, operations) to enhance processes and build better systems.

  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters, building technical expertise and leadership capability within the group.

  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen relationships and support business objectives.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of commercial property insurance experience, with strong exposure to construction-related risk (builders risk, course of construction, contractor’s equipment).

  • At least 3 years of leadership experience with proven ability to manage, mentor, and inspire teams.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, insurance, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).

  • Strong understanding of the Canadian insurance industry, underwriting principles, and regulatory frameworks.

  • Exceptional communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
