Position Overview:
Leap Recruitment Partners is currently recruiting for a dynamic Head of Construction Risk & Marine Insurance. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Inland Marine insurance with a strong background in Builder’s Risk, Course of Construction, and Contractor’s Equipment coverages. This individual will be responsible for managing the local underwriting portfolio while driving business growth and client retention within the Canadian construction and marine market.
Your Role and Impact:
As the Head of Construction Risk & Marine Insurance Canada, you will lead the local Inland Marine insurance operations with a specific focus on construction-related risks. You will be responsible for executing underwriting strategies, developing and maintaining client relationships, and supporting business growth objectives. Additionally, you will oversee a team of underwriting professionals, ensuring the achievement of financial performance targets and the alignment of local strategies with overall company goals.
Key responsibilities include:
Leadership & Management: Lead and manage the local underwriting team, including direct reports and matrix management of functional teams, while overseeing cost center budgets within the plan.
Underwriting Strategy: Develop and implement the underwriting strategy for Construction Inland Marine lines, specifically Builder’s Risk, Course of Construction, and Contractor’s Equipment, ensuring alignment with company-wide targets and contributing to global initiatives.
Portfolio Management: Oversee the local Inland Marine portfolio, including construction-related coverage, to achieve financial goals such as profitability and combined ratio targets.
Client & Broker Relations: Build and nurture relationships with brokers and clients in the construction industry, securing new business and ensuring the retention of existing accounts.
Operational Excellence: Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, corporate governance standards, and local regulations. Lead the development of new products and pricing tools specifically designed for construction-related Inland Marine coverage.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with functional teams such as Market Management, Risk Control, Claims, and Operations to ensure smooth execution of the underwriting process.
Qualifications:
10+ years of experience in an underwriting management role within Construction Inland Marine lines, with expertise in Builder’s Risk, Course of Construction, and Contractor’s Equipment coverages.
Strong knowledge of the construction industry and a solid understanding of the legal and regulatory framework surrounding construction-related risks.
Proven ability to develop relationships with brokers in the construction sector and establish a strong presence in the local market.
Demonstrated leadership and team management experience, particularly in complex, global, or multi-regional environments.
A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Economics, or a related field (preferred).
Professional insurance qualifications (e.g., CIP, FCIP, CRM) are an asset.
Expertise in the policy administration life cycle, including premium bookings, credit control, and cancellations.
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to persuade and motivate and effectively communicate complex ideas.
Familiarity with AI and machine learning applications is advantageous, with the ability to leverage insights to drive strategic decisions.
