The Opportunity:

We are seeking a highly organized and proactive Legal Clerk with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant and current insurance defence litigation experience to join our dynamic team. Reporting to and supporting two lawyers, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive administrative support and ensuring the efficient progression of files. This position requires strong attention to detail, exceptional time management skills, and the ability to build and maintain professional relationships with our clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive administrative support to two lawyers in all aspects of their insurance defence litigation practices.
  • Manage and organize legal documents, correspondence, and electronic files with meticulous accuracy.
  • Maintain and update litigation schedules, including court deadlines, discoveries, mediations, and trials.
  • Prepare and draft various legal documents, including but not limited to pleadings, motion materials, and correspondence.
  • Coordinate and schedule examinations for discovery, independent medical examinations, mediations, and other appointments.
  • Liaise professionally and effectively with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure and ensure compliance with procedural requirements and deadlines.
  • Utilize SARS (presumably Service Alberta Records Search or a similar system) effectively for relevant searches and document retrieval.
  • Manage and organize incoming and outgoing mail, faxes, and emails.
  • Maintain an organized and efficient filing system, both electronic and paper-based.
  • Assist with trial preparation, including the organization of exhibits and witness binders.
  • Process expense reports and invoices as required.
  • Provide general office support, including photocopying, scanning, and file management.
  • Work collaboratively within a team environment to ensure the smooth operation of the legal practice.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant and current experience as a Legal Clerk in insurance defence litigation is required.
  • Experience in both Accident Benefits and tort litigation is preferred.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.  
  • Thorough knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure.
  • Proficiency in SARS (Service Alberta Records Search or similar system).
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with Primafact, ACL (presumably a document management system), and Ghostpractice (or similar legal accounting software) is considered a significant asset.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a collaborative member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional rapport with clients.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in all work.
  • Professionalism, discretion, and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
