Job Description

As a key member of the Underwriting team, you will play a crucial role in driving the profitability and growth of the commercial property and casualty business. You will contribute to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of underwriting strategies, guidelines, pricing models, and service quality. Additionally, you will foster strong relationships with brokers, carriers, and reinsurers to support business growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities, developing strategic approaches to grow the portfolio.
  • Assess and manage large, complex underwriting portfolios to ensure optimal risk selection and pricing.
  • Evaluate new and renewal business in alignment with underwriting guidelines and company objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in all underwriting activities.
  • Determine underwriting positions within delegated authority limits and communicate decisions effectively to stakeholders.
  • Implement and follow risk management processes tailored to specific portfolios.
  • Meet and exceed divisional service standards, including quote turnaround times, policy issuance, renewal processing, phone inquiries, file maintenance, and documentation accuracy.
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of data within the underwriting system.
  • Oversee large insurance programs, including reinsurance placements and premium flow coordination within the network.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to underwriting staff, including underwriting assistants.
  • Travel occasionally to strengthen relationships, explore new market opportunities, and stay informed on industry trends.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to identify and leverage cross-marketing opportunities, expanding the company’s production sources.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education & Certification:

    • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, risk management, or a related field.
    • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP), or other relevant designations preferred.
  • Experience:

    • Minimum 5–10 years of underwriting experience in commercial property and casualty insurance.
    • Proven track record of handling complex and large accounts within the P&C space.
    • Experience working with brokers, carriers, and reinsurers to develop and grow portfolios.
  • Technical Skills & Expertise:

    • Strong understanding of underwriting principles, risk assessment, pricing models, and reinsurance structures.
    • Proficiency in interpreting policy wordings, endorsements, and regulatory guidelines.
    • Ability to analyze financial statements, loss history, and industry trends to make data-driven underwriting decisions.
    • Familiarity with underwriting software, rating tools, and data analytics platforms.
  • Key Competencies:

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess complex risks.
    • Excellent negotiation and decision-making skills when working with brokers and clients.
    • Ability to develop and implement underwriting strategies to support business growth.
    • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Leadership & Relationship Management:

    • Experience mentoring and coaching junior underwriters and underwriting assistants.
    • Strong ability to build and maintain relationships with brokers, clients, and internal teams.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills to convey underwriting decisions effectively.
  • Other Requirements:

    • Willingness to travel occasionally to meet with brokers, clients, and industry partners.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
