Position Overview
As a Commercial Underwriter, you will work closely with internal teams, brokers, and insurance partners to evaluate, assess, and manage commercial risks. Your expertise will play a critical role in facilitating underwriting decisions, providing guidance to stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with underwriting standards while contributing to the company’s growth and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Risk Assessment: Analyze and evaluate new business, renewals, and endorsements to determine risk acceptability, coverage, and pricing.
- Underwriting Decisions: Provide comprehensive underwriting decisions and negotiate terms with brokers and partners.
- Collaboration: Cultivate strong relationships with brokers and internal teams to support a collaborative work environment.
- Technology Utilization: Utilize systems and platforms to maintain accurate records and ensure efficient workflows.
- Market Insight: Stay informed about market trends, carrier appetites, and industry developments to provide strategic insights.
- Process Improvement: Continuously review and enhance underwriting processes to align with company goals and regulatory requirements.
- Documentation: Prepare proposals, endorsements, and other necessary documentation with accuracy and professionalism.
- Support and Guidance: Mentor and guide less experienced team members in underwriting best practices.
- Compliance: Ensure adherence to all underwriting guidelines and regulatory standards.
- Additional Duties: Undertake other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education: Post-secondary education is preferred.
- Licensing & Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial underwriting.
- Professional designations such as CIP, CRM, or equivalent are an asset.
- Skills:
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Comprehensive understanding of carrier appetites and underwriting practices.
- Advanced proficiency in Outlook, Excel, Word, PDF, and underwriting systems.
- Mindset:
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities effectively.
