Our client, a well-established Toronto law firm, is seeking an experienced Litigation Law Clerk to join their busy litigation practice. This is an excellent opportunity for an organized and proactive clerk who enjoys substantive file involvement, managing complex documentation and supporting matters through discovery, mediation and trial.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Organize and maintain litigation files and brief file materials;
  • Draft and prepare pleadings, claims, motion materials, Affidavits of Documents, Bills of Costs and pre-trial materials;
  • Prepare mediation and settlement conference briefs;
  • Summarize examinations for discovery and prepare lists of undertakings and refusals;
  • Prepare medical and litigation summaries;
  • Assist with examinations for discovery and ensure compliance with undertakings;
  • Organize and evaluate documentation received in response to undertakings;
  • Manage electronic data and documentation for discovery and trial;
  • Assist with trial preparation and overall litigation file management; and
  • Communicate with clients, opposing counsel and other parties regarding file progression and procedures.

Requirements

  • Law Clerk Diploma from a recognized college or Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario Certificate;
  • Previous litigation law clerk experience;
  • Solid knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure and Ontario court practices and procedures;
  • Excellent drafting, investigative, fact-finding and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to independently manage priorities and multiple assignments in a busy practice;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage high volumes of documentation;
  • Efficient docketing, organizational and time-management skills;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Windows; and
  • Experience with Summation, Eclipse or other litigation support software is considered an asset.
