Family Law Paralegal
Grand Rapids, MI
Full Time Onsite

Position summary
Our boutique family law firm is seeking a highly organized, discreet, and experienced Family Law Paralegal to support a small team of attorneys representing high‑net‑worth individuals in complex divorce, custody, and related family‑law matters. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with affluent clients, managing sensitive financial information, and handling high‑stakes, deadline‑driven cases in a polished, professional environment.

Key responsibilities
Assist attorneys in all stages of family law matters, including divorce, property division, spousal support, child custody/parenting time, child support, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and high‑asset or international family‑law issues.

Draft, proofread, and file court documents such as petitions, pleadings, discovery requests, motions, affidavits, proposed orders, parenting plans, and financial disclosures (Affidavit of Financial Standing, Asset & Debt/Equitable Distribution Lists).

Conduct legal research and case‑law analysis on substantive and procedural family‑law issues, including custody standards, child‑support guidelines, and equitable‑distribution principles.

Organize and maintain detailed, well‑indexed case files (physical and electronic), ensuring all documents, exhibits, and communications are accurate, secure, and court‑ready.

Interface with high‑level clients, counsel, and experts (accountants, valuation specialists, social workers, etc.), gathering and summarizing financial data, tax returns, bank records, and other key documents.

Prepare comprehensive trial and hearing binders, including exhibits, deposition summaries, privilege logs, and mediation packets, and assist attorneys in trial preparation.

Calendar court dates, mediation sessions, depositions, and expert deadlines, and proactively monitor case progression and procedural requirements.

Coordinate with court clerks and court e‑filing systems to ensure timely and accurate submissions.

Required family‑law experience and skills
Minimum of 3–5 years of experience working as a paralegal in a family‑law practice, with direct exposure to high‑net‑worth or complex divorce and custody cases preferred.

Demonstrated experience with family‑law pleadings, discovery, financial disclosures, parenting plans, and support‑related calculations (child support and spousal support worksheets or guidelines in your jurisdiction).

Strong familiarity with family‑law systems and procedures (e.g., local court rules, e‑filing platforms, and court forms) and the ability to manage multiple cases with competing deadlines.

Proficiency with legal software (case‑management, time‑tracking, and e‑filing systems) and general office applications (Word, Excel, and PDF tools).

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally and empathetically with sophisticated clients and high‑pressure opposing counsel.

Discretion and mature judgment when handling highly sensitive personal and financial information, including tax returns, bank statements, and confidential settlement discussions.

Education and credentials
Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies or a related field, or a formal paralegal‑certificate program from an ABA‑approved or equivalent program.

Certification such as NALA CP, NFPA PACE/PP, or state‑specific paralegal certification is strongly preferred.
