Firm Overview
Our well‑established, Martindale‑Hubbell‑rated law firm serves the Metro‑Detroit community from our Farmington Hills office. While our attorneys practice in a broad range of areas, this role is primarily focused on supporting a robust litigation practice, including general civil litigation, family‑law disputes, and related probate and real estate matters that intersect with litigation.
We are seeking an organized, detail‑oriented Paralegal to support our attorneys in a fast‑paced, litigation‑driven environment, where managing dockets, deadlines, and complex case files is essential to client success.
Position Summary
The Paralegal will work closely with attorneys and support staff to manage litigation‑oriented case files, prepare pleadings and discovery materials, conduct legal research, and coordinate deadlines across multiple practice groups—with a primary emphasis on civil litigation, family‑law litigation, and litigation‑related estate planning and real estate matters.
This is a full‑time, in‑office position in Farmington Hills, Michigan, with opportunities for professional growth within a respected, long‑standing firm that values process‑driven, trial‑ready support.
Key Responsibilities – Litigation‑Focused
Assist attorneys in preparing, organizing, and e‑filing civil and family‑law litigation pleadings, motions, affidavits, discovery materials, and responses to discovery requests.
Draft and proofread discovery responses, interrogatory responses, requests for production, and subpoenas, ensuring accuracy, responsiveness, and compliance with Michigan procedural rules.
Maintain and update litigation case files and matter databases, including complaints, discovery, depositions, expert reports, and exhibits, ensuring all documents are accurate, confidential, and organized for easy retrieval.
Calendar and track litigation deadlines, hearings, trials, discovery cut‑offs, and deposition dates, and coordinate with attorneys and support staff to ensure timely service and filing.
Coordinate with clients, experts, opposing counsel, courts, and third parties to obtain and/or provide documents, correspondence, and updates related to active litigation matters.
Support attorneys in trial and hearing preparation, including organizing exhibits, compiling trial notebooks, and preparing witness and exhibit lists.
Assist with family‑law litigation dockets, including preparing motions, discovery, and supporting documentation for custody, support, and property‑related disputes.
On litigation‑related matters, prepare and assist with client‑specific forms, notices, affidavits, and correspondence under the supervision of an attorney.
Assist with probate and estate‑planning matters that may involve contested issues or litigation, including drafting supporting filings and coordinating with courts and beneficiaries.
Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies or a related field; completion of an accredited paralegal program or equivalent experience is required.
Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in a law firm or legal setting with a focus on litigation, including experience in general civil litigation, family‑law disputes, or related practice areas.
Working knowledge of Michigan procedural rules, court systems, and common legal software (e.g., Westlaw/Lexis, Microsoft 365, practice‑management or case‑management software).
Strong organizational, time‑management, and multi‑tasking skills, with the ability to manage multiple litigation dockets and deadlines across different practice areas.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a professional demeanor when interacting with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel.
Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all ethical and professional standards in a litigation‑focused environment.
Preferred Attributes – Litigation‑Oriented
Prior experience supporting civil litigation, family‑law litigation, or insurance‑defense litigation matters.
Comfort working in a general‑practice, multi‑area environment where attorneys handle both litigation and transactional matters, but the paralegal’s primary function is litigation‑support.
Familiarity with trial preparation, exhibit organization, and deposition management.
Experience with e‑filing systems and case‑management tools used in litigation practices.
