A busy, multi-location medical practice is seeking a detail-oriented Patient Medical Collections Specialist to join its administrative team. This role is responsible for managing patient account balances, resolving past-due accounts, assisting patients with billing questions, and ensuring accurate and timely follow-up on outstanding balances. The specialist will interact with patients both in person and by phone and must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
Answer inbound calls and assist patients with billing questions.
Verify account information and process credit card payments.
Contact patients or responsible parties to resolve past-due accounts.
Review and research patient account statuses and documentation.
Review accounts to be sent to collections and verify accuracy of statements before distribution.
Run, maintain, and work weekly reports to monitor patient balances.
Read and interpret EOBs (Explanation of Benefits) and patient account ledgers.
Set up payment plans in accordance with established guidelines.
Educate patients on their billing statements and payment responsibilities.
Monitor aging reports and escalate accounts as needed.
Handle escalated calls from customer service staff.
Update and document insurance information when necessary.
Maintain accurate account notes and follow internal policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
3–5 years customer service experience
3–5 years collections experience
3–5 years experience in a medical office or healthcare setting
High school diploma or equivalent (required)
General understanding of healthcare billing.
Ability to read and understand EOBs.
Knowledge of HIPAA laws and compliance standards.
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent customer service skills, in person and over the phone.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.
Comfortable working within established procedures and timelines.
Team-oriented with the ability to collaborate effectively.
Ability to operate standard office equipment (phones, computers, copier, fax, etc.).
Ability to type at least 35 WPM.
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods in a typical office environment.
Manual dexterity for computer and calculator use.
Ability to see at various distances and adjust focus as needed.
