Are you an experienced payroll leader with a strong background in both U.S. and international payroll? We’re hiring a Payroll Director to oversee domestic and global payroll operations for a growing, high-performing company. In this key leadership role, you’ll manage a team, collaborate cross-functionally, and ensure payroll compliance across multiple jurisdictions. You’ll play a critical role in shaping payroll strategy and operations as the business continues to scale in the U.S. and abroad.
Location:
You’ll be required to work onsite at our San Diego office three (3) days per week—Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. This hybrid schedule supports collaboration and connection while offering flexibility the rest of the week.
Responsibilities:
Payroll Strategy & Leadership:
Develop and lead payroll strategies that align with business goals
Manage and mentor a team of payroll professionals
Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and international payroll laws and best practices
Collaborate with Finance, Treasury, and HR on payroll planning and audits
Oversee SOX compliance and internal controls
Payroll Operations:
Oversee accurate and timely payroll processing for 400+ U.S. employees in 20+ states
Lead payroll operations for UK and Netherlands entities (approx. 50+ employees)
Review payroll entries for new hires, changes, garnishments, benefits, and 401(k) contributions
Ensure accurate payroll tax reporting, deposits, and filings
Support tax compliance for new states and countries by working with appropriate government agencies
Develop and maintain SOPs, controls, and department documentation
Generate ad hoc financial and operational payroll reports
Support annual workers’ compensation audits and estimates
Provide excellent internal support for payroll questions and information
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or equivalent experience
10+ years of California payroll experience, including multi-state
5+ years in a payroll leadership role
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) required; international payroll certification preferred
Experience managing payroll for UK and Netherlands with full statutory compliance
Workday experience strongly preferred
Strong proficiency in Excel, including use of VLOOKUPs and macros
Excellent communication skills and ability to lead in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
Benefits & Compensation:
The anticipated salary range for this position is $110,000 to $175,000. This role includes a discretionary annual bonus and a discretionary stock award. We offer a competitive benefits package, including:
