Job Summary:

The Field Machinist operates portable and manual machine tools (lathes, mills, flange facers, boring bars) to produce and repair metal components on-site. You will machine components to exact tolerances using GD&T principles and perform precision measurements to ensure accuracy. This role requires travel to customer locations and strict adherence to safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate portable/manual machine tools: lathes, mills, boring bars, flange facers, etc.
  • Machine various metals (carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron) to specification using GD&T.
  • Use micrometers, dial indicators, and gauges to check tolerances and alignment.
  • Fabricate or repair parts including shafts, flanges, journals, etc. on-site.
  • Perform shaft turning, flange facing, and key seating—even in elevated/confined spaces.
  • Perform hot work (grinding, cutting) safely and in accordance with fire-watch policies.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and make necessary field adjustments.
  • Document job details, complete field reports, and maintain jobsite organization.
  • Follow safety protocols including PPE, LOTO, and hot work procedures.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training or machining apprenticeship preferred.
  • 3+ years of machine shop or field machining experience.
  • Proficiency in blueprint reading, GD&T, and use of precision instruments.
  • Ability to perform accurate machining to tight tolerances.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and field alignment tools (e.g., dial indicators, laser alignment).
  • Physically able to lift 50 lbs and work in confined spaces or at heights.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites and work flexible/extended hours.
