Job Description

Staff Electrical Engineer, Radar & High-Speed Electronics
Sioux Falls, SD | Full-Time | On-Site

High Sierra Talent is partnering with an established aerospace and defense technology company to hire a Staff Electrical Engineer to design, develop, and validate advanced electronic systems for radar and mission-critical applications.

THE ROLE
This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will lead critical design efforts across system architecture, high-speed digital design, FPGA-based systems, and mixed-signal electronics, while mentoring other engineers and solving tough problems in the lab.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design and validate electronic systems with high-speed digital interfaces, FPGAs, embedded processors, mixed-signal circuits, and RF components
  • Develop high-speed circuitry using PCIe, DDR4/5, Ethernet, SGMII, and USB, plus SPI and I2C
  • Write FPGA logic in VHDL/HDL and support embedded system architecture and integration
  • Create schematics and PCB layouts in Altium and support simulation, fabrication, bring-up, and test
  • Lead hardware verification, lab testing, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis
  • Build test setups, write test procedures, and validate designs with lab instrumentation
  • Support prototyping, hardware integration, precision soldering, rework, and field troubleshooting
  • Produce clear technical documentation and ensure designs meet quality, safety, and regulatory standards
  • Mentor engineers and collaborate with engineering teams, suppliers, and customers
  • Contribute to project planning, system architecture, proposals, and continuous improvement

MUST-HAVES

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 8 to 12 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Strong high-speed digital circuit design, signal integrity, and embedded electronics experience
  • Hands-on FPGA experience with VHDL/HDL and microprocessor architectures
  • Schematic capture and PCB design in Altium or comparable tools
  • Experience with PCIe, DDR4/5, Ethernet, USB, SPI, and I2C
  • Proficiency with lab instrumentation, board bring-up, debugging, and prototype validation
  • Familiarity with Git or Subversion
  • Proven technical leadership, sound judgment, and strong documentation skills
  • U.S. Citizen, eligible to obtain a security clearance
  • Comfortable in a hands-on lab environment, with occasional travel

NICE-TO-HAVES

  • RF circuit design and analysis, including GHz-frequency systems
  • Power electronics and power system design
  • Experience with spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, and signal generators
  • Aerospace, defense, or ruggedized electronics background
  • Thermal management of high-performance electronics, including conduction cooling and thermal analysis

TECH STACK
Altium, VHDL/HDL, FPGAs, embedded processors, PCIe, DDR4/5, Ethernet, SGMII, USB, SPI, I2C, signal integrity, mixed-signal and RF design, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, VNAs, Git/SVN

WHY THIS ROLE

  • Real ownership: Lead designs from architecture through deployment
  • Meaningful work: Build radar electronics that support national security missions
  • Technical leadership: Mentor engineers and shape system architecture
  • Hands-on: Spend real time in the lab, not just in meetings
