Your Next Career Move Starts Here!

The Role: Principal AI Software Engineering & SDD Consultant

Location: Remote

Type: 4–8 weeks

Hours: Part-time or full-time, depending on project needs

What You’ll Do:

We are seeking an experienced Principal AI Software Engineering & Specification-Driven Development (SDD) Consultant to lead and coach a team through a pilot implementation combining specification-driven development with agentic AI coding.

The consultant will bring proven, firsthand experience applying AI-assisted and agentic software development practices in real-world delivery environments. The primary objective is to help the team successfully take a real project from structured specifications through AI-assisted implementation, testing, validation, and delivery, while establishing repeatable practices the team can continue independently after the engagement.

This is a hands-on methodology and adoption consulting role, similar in spirit to an Agile Coach supporting an organization during early Agile adoption. The successful consultant will bring established frameworks, tools, templates, workflows, quality controls, and lessons learned from prior implementations.

The ideal candidate has recently worked on production software initiatives where AI coding agents and structured specifications were used together, and can clearly articulate their personal contributions, technical decisions, challenges, and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

Specification-Driven Development

  • Establish and facilitate a practical specification-driven development framework for the pilot.
  • Develop or adapt templates and standards for creating complete, implementation-ready specifications.
  • Coach subject-matter experts, product owners, developers, and technical stakeholders on writing effective specifications.
  • Ensure specifications address both functional and non-functional requirements, including:
    • Security
    • Scalability
    • Performance
    • Integration
    • Maintainability
    • Testing and validation
    • Reliability
    • Monitoring and operations
    • Data requirements
    • Compliance and risk considerations
  • Establish clear criteria for determining when a specification is sufficiently complete for AI-assisted implementation.

Agentic AI Software Development

  • Guide the team in using AI coding agents to translate structured specifications into working software.
  • Recommend and establish appropriate AI development tools, platforms, and workflows.
  • Help define how AI agents should be prompted, constrained, tested, reviewed, and monitored.
  • Establish practical workflows for agent-generated code, including human review and approval.
  • Identify appropriate tasks for autonomous or semi-autonomous AI execution versus tasks requiring direct human technical judgment.
  • Demonstrate effective AI-assisted development practices through hands-on coaching.

Engineering Quality & Governance

  • Establish quality controls and technical review checkpoints for AI-generated software.
  • Develop practices for validating AI-generated code for correctness, security, maintainability, performance, and architectural alignment.
  • Define appropriate automated testing and validation practices.
  • Establish human-in-the-loop controls and escalation points for technical decisions.
  • Help the team identify and mitigate risks associated with AI-generated software.
  • Recommend appropriate integration with existing development, source-control, CI/CD, testing, and deployment processes.

Coaching & Team Enablement

  • Work directly with technical team throughout the pilot.
  • Coach developers and technical stakeholders on the new methodology and development workflow.
  • Provide practical examples, demonstrations, templates, and reusable assets.
  • Help the team build the skills necessary to continue using the methodology independently after the engagement.
  • Identify areas where the process can be improved based on real-world results.
  • Document lessons learned, recommended practices, and next steps for broader adoption.

Advisory & Strategic Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the team's current development practices and identify opportunities for AI-assisted improvement.
  • Recommend tools and technologies appropriate for Trinity's environment and objectives.
  • Establish practical adoption guidelines rather than theoretical AI development principles.
  • Provide ongoing technical guidance to project leadership and engineering stakeholders.
  • Help define success criteria and measurable outcomes for the pilot.
  • Provide a final assessment of the pilot, including recommendations for scaling the methodology.

Required Qualifications:

  • Significant professional experience in software engineering, software architecture, AI engineering, developer productivity, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Recent, firsthand experience implementing specification-driven development together with AI coding agents in a real software development environment.
  • Demonstrated experience using AI coding agents to support or perform meaningful portions of software implementation.
  • Strong understanding of modern software development methodologies, architecture, testing, CI/CD, and engineering quality practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish development frameworks, standards, templates, and repeatable workflows.
  • Strong understanding of software security, scalability, integration, maintainability, and operational requirements.
  • Experience establishing human review and technical governance around AI-generated code.
  • Excellent coaching, facilitation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with both highly technical stakeholders and subject-matter experts who may not have deep software engineering backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to explain specific prior implementations, including the candidate's personal role, technical decisions, tools utilized, challenges encountered, and measurable outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, AI Engineering Lead, AI Architect, Software Architect, Developer Productivity Architect, or similar senior technical role.
  • Experience with modern agentic coding and AI development platforms such as:
    • Claude Code
    • GitHub Copilot / Copilot Coding Agent
    • OpenAI Codex
    • Cursor
    • Other comparable AI coding-agent platforms
  • Experience designing AI-assisted software engineering workflows.
  • Experience with automated testing and AI-generated code validation.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD and DevSecOps practices.
  • Experience with enterprise software architecture and integration.
  • Experience in healthcare, life sciences, regulated industries, or other environments where security, privacy, quality, and governance are important.
  • Experience coaching organizations through adoption of new software engineering methodologies or technologies.
