Field Technician

POSITION OVERVIEW

This role is a great fit for an experienced HVAC professional who enjoys hands-on, technical work and wants to apply deep expertise across commercial and industrial HVAC control systems. The Field Technician travels to job sites to start up, test, and troubleshoot equipment. Additional training is provided on the client's specific products and systems, building on the technician's existing field experience.

Salary: Based on experience
Location: Pittsburgh, PA (primarily local, within 90 minutes of the office, with occasional out-of-state trips)
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, overtime possible depending on project needs

CLIENT OVERVIEW

Our client is a Pittsburgh-based commercial and industrial HVAC manufacturer's representative, serving the consulting engineer and contractor community with a strong reputation for technical service and long-term customer relationships. Product and systems training is provided at their Pittsburgh facility and at manufacturer locations. Clients include large mechanical contractors on university, hospital, data center, and commercial construction projects (no residential work). The focus is troubleshooting and commissioning, not preventative maintenance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Confirm equipment readiness and perform documented start up of HVAC systems, including electrical, airflow, gas, and refrigerant checks
• Start up and troubleshoot control products including Johnson Direct Digital Controls (DDC) systems, Yaskawa Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), gas detection systems, and lab/healthcare critical controls
• Start up mechanical systems including gas fired make up air units, commercial gas/electric rooftop units, industrial heating and cooling units, and advanced fan systems with controls
• Perform calibration, testing, and compliance verification across product lines, drawing on prior field experience to diagnose complex issues independently
• Provide technical support and warranty repairs (Yaskawa) as needed
• Complete preventative maintenance and field measurement/verification of installed systems
• Support control panel fabrication, parts selection, and the internal sales team with technical input
• Deliver on annual service contracts and maintain strong customer service throughout
• Perform regular rooftop work in all weather conditions, following required safety training
• When not in the field, work from the office and support the warehouse and panel shop with light duty tasks
• Serve as a client facing representative in the field, working directly with contractors and other personalities on job sites
• Collaborate closely with the internal sales team to support client needs
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced technicians as needed

REQUIREMENTS

Required:

• Minimum 5 years of hands on HVAC field experience (technical school graduate in HVAC or Electrical is a plus but not a substitute for field experience)
• Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex commercial and industrial HVAC systems with minimal supervision
• Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail, including daily documentation
• Good communication and computer skills
• Willingness and ability to travel as required, including occasional out of state trips (manufacturer factory training, such as in Wisconsin or Ohio, may be required early on; day to day out of state travel is very limited long term)
• Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening
• Strong cultural fit: a team player with a positive attitude who works well with people
• Adaptable and comfortable with shifting priorities, last minute travel, and gray zone decisions
• Comfortable working with and supporting salespeople

Preferred (ideal candidate):

• 5+ years of experience with DDC controls, VFDs, or industrial HVAC equipment specifically
• Prior experience on university, hospital, data center, or large commercial construction projects
• Experience mentoring or training junior technicians
