Job Description
Job Title: Automation Technician / PLC Programmer
Location: Tulsa, OK area (on-site, field-based project)
About the Role:
A Houston-based controls and automation integrator is adding a hands-on PLC professional to support a municipal water/wastewater project in the Tulsa area. You'll update and troubleshoot existing control systems, not build programs from a blank screen. Water experience is a bonus, but oil and gas automation backgrounds translate very well here.
What You'll Do:
- Open, read, and edit existing PLC logic to make modifications, corrections, and functional updates
- Diagnose control system problems across PLCs, field instruments, wiring, and communications
- Adjust and maintain operator screens on the HMI/SCADA side, focusing on graphics, alarms, and operator-facing displays rather than server/database work
- Work directly with field devices, panels, and terminations during installation, checkout, and startup
- Support loop checks and commissioning at plant and remote sites
- Document changes and communicate updates to the project team and end-user staff
What You Bring:
- 5+ years in industrial controls, automation, or I&E roles
- Working knowledge of at least one of these platforms: SCADAPack, AutomationDirect, Siemens, Modicon/Schneider, or Red Lion
- A solid grasp of how a PLC functions internally (I/O, addressing, logic flow, comms) and the confidence to safely change a running program
- Exposure to a SCADA package such as AVEVA/Wonderware, ClearSCADA (Geo SCADA), VTScada, or similar
- General instrumentation knowledge (pressure, level, flow, analyzers) and strong troubleshooting habits
- Field-based, hands-on experience, including reading drawings and working with control wiring
- No degree required; PLC work doesn't need to have been your daily focus, as long as your knowledge is solid
Nice to Have:
- Municipal water/wastewater or lift station/pump station experience
- Upstream or midstream oil and gas automation (well sites, compressor stations, tank batteries)
- Allen-Bradley familiarity (helpful, not required)
- Radio/cellular telemetry or RTU experience
- NFPA 70E / OSHA safety training
Ideal Candidate
A practical controls professional who understands how PLCs and field equipment work together and can confidently troubleshoot and modify existing systems. Programming from scratch is not required. Candidates who work with PLCs periodically are welcome if they have sufficient technical depth. Allen-Bradley experience is acceptable but not required.
