Microsoft SQL Server DBA (Contract)

Overview
A client in the greater Phoenix area is currently seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) for a contract assignment within the financial services/banking industry.
This role will support the performance, reliability, and security of enterprise database environments and is responsible for database administration, optimization, and support of mission-critical systems across both on-premises and cloud (Azure) environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments (2016–2022)
- Monitor and optimize database performance, including query tuning, indexing, and execution plan analysis
- Perform database backups, restores, and disaster recovery planning (HA/DR)
- Manage high availability solutions such as Always On Availability Groups and Failover Clustering
- Support database migrations and upgrades (on-premises to Azure preferred)
- Implement and maintain database security, permissions, and compliance standards
- Troubleshoot production issues and provide root cause analysis
- Automate routine DBA tasks using scripting tools (PowerShell, T-SQL)
- Collaborate with development, infrastructure, and application teams
- Maintain documentation for database configurations, standards, and processes
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience as a SQL Server DBA in enterprise environments
- Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server (2016 or newer)
- Hands-on experience with performance tuning and query optimization
- Experience with backup/recovery processes and HA/DR strategies
- Strong knowledge of T-SQL scripting and database design principles
- Experience with SQL Server security and user/access management
- Familiarity with monitoring tools and performance diagnostics
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Azure SQL (Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, SQL on Azure VMs)
- Experience with cloud migrations and hybrid environments
- Exposure to SSIS, SSRS, or SSAS
- Experience with automation using PowerShell
- Relevant Microsoft SQL Server or Azure certifications
