Overview
A well-established EPC firm is seeking a Commissioning Mechanical Superintendent to lead the final execution phase of large-scale industrial construction projects. This role is responsible for ensuring that mechanical systems are properly installed, tested, and fully operational prior to turnover.
You will serve as a key field leader during commissioning and startup, driving safety, quality, and system performance while coordinating closely with engineering, construction, and operations teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily safety meetings and enforce compliance with all mechanical safety standards, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) and permitting requirements
- Oversee pre-commissioning, commissioning, and startup of major mechanical systems, including pumps, piping systems, rotating equipment, HVAC, and process utilities
- Conduct detailed system walkdowns to verify installation completeness and identify deficiencies prior to testing
- Direct and support functional testing activities such as system flushing, hydrostatic testing, leak checks, equipment alignment, and mechanical run-ins
- Troubleshoot mechanical system issues during commissioning and drive resolution with appropriate teams
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, vendors, and operations personnel to ensure systems meet readiness and performance criteria
- Track commissioning progress and provide clear, consistent updates to project leadership
- Maintain accurate documentation, including test records, checklists, redlines, and turnover packages
Qualifications
- Proven experience in commissioning and startup of large-scale mechanical systems within industrial environments
- Strong knowledge of mechanical infrastructure, including HVAC systems, hydronic systems, process cooling, piping, and rotating equipment
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing field teams of approximately 15–25 technicians during commissioning and turnover phases
- Familiarity with commissioning workflows, system completion processes, and related tracking software/tools
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and technical specifications
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in field environments
- Effective communication skills with the ability to coordinate across multiple disciplines
Work Environment & Expectations
- Remote role with extensive travel to project sites; flexibility to relocate based on project demands is required
- Work performed in active industrial construction environments with varying site conditions
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and critical startup schedules as needed
- Strong commitment to safety, execution quality, and meeting project deadlines
