Job Title: Field Controls Engineer
Location: Remote (U.S. Based) with ~50% Travel
Position Type: Contract-to-Hire
An EPC firm is seeking a Field Controls Engineer to support a growing automation and controls group. This role will work closely with a senior lead engineer to execute projects involving the design, programming, and commissioning of control systems for packaged equipment and process facilities.
This is a travel-based role (approximately 50%) supporting projects nationwide. When not deployed to project sites, work will be performed remotely from a home office.
Assist in the design, development, and implementation of industrial control systems for packaged equipment and process applications.
Program and configure PLC systems, including modifications and new development under the guidance of the lead engineer.
Support control strategy implementation based on P&IDs, process descriptions, and engineering documentation.
Participate in field installation, loop checks, startup, and commissioning activities.
Troubleshoot PLC, instrumentation, and control system issues during project execution.
Work collaboratively with engineering disciplines and field personnel to ensure proper system integration.
Interface with customers across industries including Oil & Gas, Utilities, Healthcare, and Industrial Facilities.
Help develop documentation, testing procedures, and system deliverables.
Grow into increased technical responsibility as the department expands.
5+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or a related technical role.
Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation PLCs.
Familiarity with packaged equipment such as pump skids, compressor systems, or similar process units.
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and basic control loop functionality.
Experience supporting system startup, commissioning, or field troubleshooting.
Willingness to travel approximately 50% to project sites across the U.S.
Experience in midstream Oil & Gas or other process industries.
Exposure to EPC project environments.
Experience with HMI/SCADA systems and industrial communications.
Strong mechanical/process awareness to support field integration work.
Desire to grow into a senior or lead engineering role over time.
Clear path to a long-term position through a contract-to-hire structure.
