Job Title: Field Controls Engineer (Lead)
Location: Remote (U.S. Based) with ~50% Travel
Position Type: Direct Hire
An established EPC firm is seeking a senior-level Field Controls Engineer to lead the execution and expansion of its controls and automation services. This role is designed for a highly experienced engineer who can take ownership of projects from concept through commissioning while helping build and mentor a growing team.
This is a travel-based position (approximately 50%) supporting projects across the United States. When not in the field, the engineer will work remotely from a home office.
Design, develop, and implement industrial control systems for packaged equipment and process applications.
Program PLC systems from scratch, including architecture, configuration, and commissioning.
Interpret and develop control strategies directly from P&IDs, process narratives, and client requirements.
Lead field startup, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities at customer sites.
Serve as the technical authority for controls-related deliverables across EPC projects.
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams to ensure seamless system integration.
Provide hands-on support for system testing, loop checks, and operational validation.
Interface directly with clients across industries including Oil & Gas, Utilities, Healthcare, and Industrial Manufacturing.
Establish standards, documentation, and best practices for the controls group.
Play a foundational role in building and leading a growing controls team, including mentoring junior engineers and supporting hiring efforts.
10+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or related EPC environments.
Strong experience working with packaged equipment systems (compressors, skids, pump systems, etc.).
Demonstrated ability to design and program PLC systems from the ground up.
Extensive hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation PLC platforms.
Solid understanding of process control, instrumentation, and control loop design.
Proven ability to read, interpret, and implement control strategies from P&IDs.
Background that includes both engineering design and field execution/commissioning.
Ability and willingness to travel approximately 50% nationwide.
Experience supporting midstream Oil & Gas facilities and operations.
Previous experience working within an EPC project delivery model.
Leadership experience or demonstrated ability to build and scale technical teams.
Familiarity with SCADA, HMI development, and industrial networking.
PE license or progression toward licensure is a plus.
