Job Title: Substation Group Manager
Location: Remote (Illinois) with occasional travel to Chicago office


About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Substation Group Manager to lead our utilities engineering team. In this position, you’ll oversee the planning, design, and execution of substation projects while mentoring staff and ensuring quality, efficiency, and compliance with industry standards. Our Utilities division provides engineering services that power electric and gas utilities nationwide, supporting a wide range of projects from renewable energy and wind farms to data centers, transmission systems, and industrial facilities.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; PMP certification is a plus.

  • Minimum of 15 years of industry experience, with at least 4 years in a supervisory or responsible-in-charge role.

  • Advanced understanding of utility design standards, including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.

  • In-depth knowledge of substation design, including physical layouts, protection and control systems, one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and supporting calculations.

  • Strong familiarity with loss prevention practices and quality assurance procedures.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, mentoring, and team collaboration skills.


Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Manage department resources and provide mentorship to staff.

  • Conduct performance evaluations, lead professional development activities, and organize team meetings.

  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and training new team members.

Project Oversight & Technical Leadership:

  • Lead substation design efforts for large and complex projects.

  • Review and supervise calculations, drawings, and specifications, ensuring quality and compliance.

  • Perform condition assessments and feasibility studies.

  • Manage group utilization and monitor project budgets and efficiency.

Client & Business Engagement:

  • Support proposal preparation and marketing initiatives.

  • Attend client meetings and help maintain strong relationships.

  • Contribute to business development strategies for the substation group.
