Job Description
Senior Database Administration
Remote (Ecuador)
Contract
The Database Administration function partners closely with CloudOps, Engineering, and Security to support client's mission-critical, customer-facing platforms. The team is responsible for ensuring the stability, performance, scalability, and security of cloud-hosted database systems that power our SaaS applications.
About The Role:
We are seeking a Senior Database Administrator to support and evolve our cloud-based database platforms. This role specializes in Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL, with some responsibility for Oracle databases running on AWS RDS. The primary technology focus is AWS RDS and Aurora.
Primary Objectives:
Ensure the availability, reliability, performance, and security of cloud-hosted database systems across production and non-production environments.
Own database operations on AWS RDS and Aurora, including monitoring, capacity planning, patching/maintenance, and support of SLAs and data-handling policies.
Drive continuous improvement through standardization and automation of database operational practices, backup/recovery, and high-availability patterns.
What You Will Be Doing:
Administer and support AWS RDS and Aurora environments with a primary focus on Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL, and secondary support for Oracle RDS.
Manage day-to-day database operations including availability, monitoring, patching, upgrades, parameter management, and maintenance windows.
Perform performance tuning and optimization (query tuning, indexing strategies, statistics maintenance, and configuration tuning) to meet application SLAs.
Design, implement, and regularly test backup, restore, and disaster recovery procedures to meet defined RTO/RPO targets.
Troubleshoot and resolve database incidents related to performance, replication, storage, connectivity, and availability with minimal customer impact.
Partner with Engineering and CloudOps on releases, schema changes, and database-related architecture decisions, including high availability and scaling approaches.
Apply security best practices including encryption (at rest/in transit), access controls, auditing/logging, and secure data-handling procedures.
Support database migrations and modernization initiatives, including adoption and optimization of managed AWS database capabilities.
Automate routine operational tasks using scripting and repeatable processes; contribute to runbooks, standards, and documentation.
Participate in on-call rotation and incident response activities as required.
What We Are Looking For:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, a related field, or equivalent experience.
5+ years of experience in database administration or a database-focused engineering role.
Strong hands-on expertise with Microsoft SQL Server in production environments (performance tuning, HA/DR, backup/restore, and operational troubleshooting).
Strong hands-on expertise with PostgreSQL in production environments (query optimization, indexing, vacuum/analyze strategy, and operational troubleshooting).
Experience administering databases on AWS RDS and/or Aurora, including parameter groups, option groups, monitoring, and maintenance planning.
Working knowledge of Oracle databases, preferably in AWS-managed environments (RDS).
Strong understanding of database security concepts, access control, encryption, auditing, and safe data-handling procedures.
Experience with monitoring/observability and incident response practices for production database systems.
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
What will Make You Stand Out:
Deep experience operating and tuning SQL Server and PostgreSQL on AWS RDS and/or Aurora.
Experience designing and testing backup/restore, disaster recovery, and high availability strategies in managed AWS database environments.
AWS and/or database certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Database – Specialty, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
