POSITION TITLE: Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)

DEPARTMENT: Rehabilitation

REPORTS TO: Occupational Therapist/Director of Rehab

POSITION SUMMARY:

Helps residents regain motor skills and improve their physical health to effectively perform daily activities through the use of various therapeutic exercises and activities only under the direction of the occupational therapist in accordance with local, state and federal regulations, standards, state occupational therapy practice act, and established facility policies and procedures to provide appropriate care and services to residents.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Assists in the practice of occupational therapy and activities requiring an understanding of occupational therapy but not requiring professional or advanced training in the anatomical, biological, and physical sciences involved in the practice of occupational therapy.
  2. Practices only under the direction of a registered occupational therapist.
  3. Implements the occupational therapy treatment plan as established by the occupational therapist in accordance with the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) in accordance with guidelines issued by the governing body and its respective affiliate state chapter, current state and federal laws and regulations; and respective practice act(s) in the state.
  4. Records the residents’ progress and can request a reexamination if/when needed.
  5. Offers suggestions, provides feedback, carries-out agreed upon activities, and voices constructive concerns in a collaborative manner with the occupational therapist.
  6. Interviews new and returning residents to assist the occupational therapist in determining their health and rate of recovery.
  7. Documents occupational therapy services by charting in the resident medical record.
  8. Attends and contributes to patient care, staffing conferences and other required meetings as a representative of occupational therapy, under the direction of the Occupational Therapist.
  9. Responsible for adherence to department and patient treatment schedule, timely clinical and billing documentation requirements as well as work related meetings.
  10. Works with other members of the rehabilitation team to develop programs and activities consistent with the needs and capabilities of each patient.
  11. Instructs patients, families and other caregivers in the skills and techniques of the occupational therapy treatment program under the supervision of the Occupational Therapist.
  12. Maintains appropriate and timely documentation for all patients
  13. Cleans, maintains, identifies, and reports the need for repair of equipment, as
  14. Puts Patient Service First: Ensures that patients and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights.
  15. Implements a patient's individualized treatment plan as established by the primary Occupational
  16. Provides individualized occupational therapy interventions including application of therapeutic techniques in such areas as but not limited.
