Summary:

Capstone IT is helping our client, recognized by Forbes as one of the “Best Places to Work,” find a Java Full Stack Engineer who will… build, modernize, test, and support enterprise applications within a SAFe Agile environment. This is a backend- and database-heavy engineering role, with approximately 60% backend, 35% database, and 5% frontend work. The engineer will develop Java/Spring Boot microservices and REST APIs, work extensively with relational databases and SQL, integrate event-driven services, and support automated testing, CI/CD, containerized deployments, and production systems.

Responsibilities

Backend & API Development

• Build and maintain scalable applications using Java and Spring Boot.
• Develop microservices and RESTful APIs.
• Create API contracts and OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.
• Implement JWT/OAuth2 authentication.
• Build integrations using Kafka or similar messaging technology.
• Modernize legacy applications through adapters and modern coding practices.

Database Engineering

• Design and support relational databases including PostgreSQL, Oracle, and SQL Server.
• Develop and optimize SQL queries and procedures.
• Use JPA/Hibernate for application data access.
• Support data migration, transformation, and integration.
• Tune database operations for performance and scalability.

Cloud, DevOps & Testing

• Containerize applications with Docker and deploy through Kubernetes/Fargate environments.
• Build and support CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions or Jenkins, Gradle, and Git.
• Develop unit, integration, interaction, and end-to-end automated tests.
• Use JUnit, Spock, and Mockito.
• Target 80–90% automated test coverage on new development.

Frontend

• Build or maintain limited React/Angular functionality.
• Integrate frontend components with APIs and backend services.

Production & Agile Delivery

• Own assigned stories from development through production.
• Participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming, reviews, and retrospectives.
• Create user stories and acceptance criteria in Jira.
• Maintain technical documentation in Confluence.
• Participate in code reviews, mentoring, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
• Participate in an off-hours on-call rotation.

Qualifications

Required

• Strong enterprise Java development experience.
• Hands-on Spring Boot and microservices experience.
• Strong SQL and relational database experience.
• Experience developing and integrating REST APIs.
• Experience with JPA/Hibernate.
• Experience writing automated unit and integration tests.
• Experience with Git-based source control and CI/CD practices.
• Experience delivering production-ready applications in Agile environments.

2. Role Context – This Company

This engineer will work within Workplace Solutions, operating as a core member of one of eight SAFe Agile teams and specifically supporting the Bill Force team. The work appears tied to enterprise modernization and growth initiatives involving billing/business applications, APIs, data services, and legacy-system integration.

Despite the "Full Stack" title, this is not a traditional evenly split full-stack position. Roughly 95% of the workload is backend and database work, making Java/Spring Boot and SQL significantly more important than React.

The engineer is expected to own work end to end: understand the business need, develop the service or application, work with the database, automate testing, support deployment, document the solution, and help support it in production.

The description also places unusual emphasis on database work for a Java engineer. Candidates who are strong Java developers but weak in SQL/database performance work are likely to struggle.
