Job Description
Overview of the Role: The Electrical Design & Regulatory Compliance Engineer is responsible for both the design and development of electrical components and products within the Product Enhancement Engineering team and for ensuring product safety/compliance with applicable electrical, electronic, and radio frequency standards and directives for market access across the entire business.
- Lead design and development of electrical components and products, including schematic design, PCB layout, firmware, and prototype development, ensuring compliance with technical, safety, and regulatory standards.
- Assure product safety/compliance with appropriate electrical, electronic, and radio frequency standards and directives for market access on all existing and new products.
- Coordinate electrical, electronic, and radio frequency compliance testing for products using outside agencies to perform testing and outside consultants when needed.
- Advise engineering staff on applicable standards and other requirements to assist in product design efforts for new and existing products.
- Monitor emerging trends, policy changes, and regulation/guideline updates; analyze and communicate these to the organization in a proactive manner.
- Author Declaration of Conformity (DOC) documentation for appropriate products and the standards to which they must legally adhere.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Sourcing, Manufacturing, Innovation, and Marketing to ensure products meet business, technical, and regulatory requirements.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Electrical Design:
- Design, develop, and refine electrical components and prototypes for projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, performance, safety, and cost objectives.
- Design new electronics hardware and firmware; modify existing schematics and layouts; maintain existing products by addressing component obsolescence and adding new functionality as required.
- Collaborate with Sourcing and Manufacturing teams to identify, integrate, and manage electronic components that meet specifications and quality standards. Provide final electrical specifications.
- Ensure product enhancements are properly validated and documented via the product development process; finalize electrical specifications and support manufacturing to ensure smooth production transitions.
- Display perseverance and flexibility in overcoming technical challenges; approach setbacks as opportunities to find alternative solutions, maintaining a proactive, growth-oriented mindset to drive project success.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Assure product compliance with applicable electrical, electronic, and radio frequency standards and directives for market access; provide direction on compliance requirements early in the design process to engineering and cross-functional teams.
- Coordinate compliance testing and certification for products through outside agencies; remain informed through regulatory bulletins, periodicals, training programs, online research, and business associations regarding up-to-date regulations and requirements.
- Keep products up to date including product markings, manuals, artwork, model engraving, label claims, warning statements per appropriate compliance organizations; steward all relevant inspections and reviews performed by regulatory agencies, inspectors, or compliance assessment organizations.
Testing & Validation:
- Develop and conduct statistically sound testing techniques that meet regulatory and functional requirements, using appropriate specified and/or acquired testing facilities and equipment; report results in a professional and easily understandable manner.
- Define tolerances for critical components and ensure designs incorporate manufacturing limitations and performance attributes.
- Review test protocols and final reports for accuracy according to regulatory directives; communicate discrepancies with the lab and team members to ensure projects remain on-track and within cost targets.
General:
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Position may include minimal travel for project meetings, supplier visits, regulatory agency interactions, and production assessments.
- Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
Successful Candidate Profile:
- Associate degree in an appropriate field, such as Electronics Engineering required.
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field preferred.
- 2 4 years experience in PCB-level product design, IC selection, BOM development, and related EE engineering activities.
- Experience in electronic regulatory compliance (electrical, electronic, and/or radio frequency standards).
- Proficiency in appropriate computer design software (e.g., OrCAD, Altium, EagleCAD, KiCAD, DipTrace, UpVerter) required.
- Experience writing embedded firmware code; RF (radio frequency) product design, IoT, and machine learning is a plus.
- Project management and other regulatory compliance activities are a plus.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills; strong communication and presentation skills.
