About the Role:

In this contract position, you will provide professional on-site medical interpreting services between patients and healthcare providers in a clinical setting. You will be a key conduit for accurate, culturally sensitive communication, ensuring that patients fully understand their care and providers obtain clear, reliable information. Your work will help reduce misunderstandings, support informed consent, and enhance the overall quality of patient care.

Compensation

On-Site: $90–$100/hour (2-hour minimum applies)

Rates are based on certification, experience, and assignment requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver consecutive and simultaneous interpreting between patients, families, and healthcare providers during medical encounters.
• Facilitate patient-provider communication during assessments, treatment discussions, procedures, discharge planning, and follow-up appointments.
• Accurately interpret complex medical terminology, diagnoses, treatment plans, and consent forms without additions, omissions, or alterations.
• Apply cultural competence to clarify cultural nuances that may impact healthcare decisions and patient understanding.
• Maintain strict confidentiality while adhering to interpreter ethics and healthcare privacy standards.
• Use active listening and structured note-taking to ensure accurate message transfer.
• Maintain professionalism and neutrality in high-stress or emotionally sensitive situations.
• Collaborate effectively with healthcare staff before, during, and after interpreting assignments.

Key Requirements:

• Current CCHI or CMI Certification (Required).
• Advanced bilingual fluency in English and Vietnamese.
• Previous medical interpreting experience in healthcare settings.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology.
• Ability to perform both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.
• Excellent communication, listening, memory retention, and note-taking skills.
• Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical interpreting standards.

Desirable Skills:

• Experience interpreting across multiple healthcare specialties.
• Familiarity with healthcare workflows and electronic health record (EHR) environments.
• Experience working with multidisciplinary care teams.
• Knowledge of Vietnamese regional dialects and cultural considerations affecting healthcare communication.
• Ongoing professional development in medical interpreting.

Qualifications:

• CCHI or CMI Certification required.
• Completion of a formal medical interpreter training program.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; higher education preferred.
• Compliance with applicable state or institutional interpreter requirements.
• Continuing education in medical interpreting is a plus.
