About the Role:

In this contract position, you will provide professional medical interpreting services between patients and healthcare providers across a variety of clinical settings, both on-site and remotely. You will be a key conduit for accurate, culturally sensitive communication, ensuring that patients fully understand their care and providers obtain clear, reliable information. Your work will help reduce misunderstandings, support informed consent, and enhance the overall quality of patient care.

Compensation

  • OPI: $25–$32/hour
  • VRI: $30–$38/hour
  • Onsite: $50–$70/hour (2-hour minimum may apply)

Rates vary based on experience, certification, and assignment type.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver consecutive and simultaneous interpreting between patients, families, and healthcare providers in clinical, administrative, and telehealth encounters.
  • Facilitate patient-provider communication during assessments, procedures, treatment discussions, discharge planning, and follow-up appointments.
  • Accurately interpret complex medical terminology, diagnoses, treatment plans, and consent forms without additions, omissions, or alterations.
  • Apply cultural competence to clarify cultural nuances, beliefs, and practices that may affect healthcare decisions and patient understanding.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to professional codes of ethics and institutional policies in all interpreting assignments.
  • Use active listening and structured note-taking techniques to ensure precise, complete message transfer in high-volume or complex interactions.
  • Manage interpreting sessions in high-stress or emotionally charged situations while maintaining neutrality, composure, and professionalism.
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to clarify communication needs, prepare for encounters, and document interpreting activities as required.

Key Requirements:

  • Advanced bilingual fluency (spoken and comprehension) in English and the target language used in clinical interactions.
  • Proven experience as a medical or healthcare interpreter in hospital, clinic, or similar healthcare settings.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in medical terminology across multiple specialties and care settings.
  • Strong skills in both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting in fast-paced, time-sensitive environments.
  • Evidenced cultural competence in healthcare contexts, including working with diverse patient populations.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound ethical judgment in complex or sensitive situations.
  • Excellent active listening, memory retention, and note-taking abilities to support accurate message delivery.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with the ability to self-monitor and correct interpreting output in real time.
  • Effective stress management and emotional resilience when handling traumatic, end-of-life, or otherwise distressing content.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience providing remote/virtual interpreting via phone, video, or telehealth platforms.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical workflows.
  • Prior work with multidisciplinary teams (physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists) in acute or specialty care settings.
  • Knowledge of regional dialects, slang, and health literacy considerations affecting patient communication.
  • Participation in ongoing professional development, workshops, or interpreter mentoring programs.

Qualifications:

  • CHI™ Certification and/or CMI certification from a recognized certifying body.
  • Completion of a formal medical interpreter training program or equivalent professional interpreter training.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a related field (languages, healthcare, social sciences) preferred.
  • Current compliance with any applicable state or institutional requirements for medical interpreters (where relevant).
  • Evidence of continuing education in medical interpreting, ethics, or healthcare communication is an advantage.
