About the Role:

You will provide certified legal interpreting services in courtrooms, hearings, client meetings, and related legal settings, ensuring precise and impartial communication between parties. Working in a hybrid capacity, you will handle both in-person and remote assignments, adapting to varying case types and procedural requirements. Your work will play a critical role in safeguarding due process and supporting legal professionals, clients, and court personnel.

Compensation

Remote (Video/Phone): $30–$45/hour

Onsite (Court/Depositions): $60+/hour (2-hour minimum may apply)

  • Rates vary based on certification level, experience, and assignment complexity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver consecutive and simultaneous interpreting in courtrooms, hearings, depositions, and attorney-client conferences with high accuracy and neutrality.
  • Interpret complex legal terminology, procedural language, and case-specific content in real time for judges, attorneys, witnesses, and defendants.
  • Take clear, structured notes and apply strong memory retention techniques to maintain continuity and accuracy throughout proceedings.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing case files, legal documents, and relevant background materials to understand context and terminology.
  • Provide interpreting services in both in-person and remote/hybrid settings, using appropriate technology and platforms as required.
  • Maintain strict ethical standards and confidentiality in all interactions and handling of sensitive information.
  • Coordinate schedules, manage multiple assignments, and track time commitments to meet court and client deadlines.
  • Communicate professionally with legal teams, court staff, and agency coordinators to clarify requirements and ensure smooth service delivery.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a legal or court interpreter, including work within formal courtroom or tribunal environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in legal terminology and procedures across criminal, civil, and/or administrative matters.
  • Demonstrated expertise in both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting in high-pressure, fast-paced settings.
  • Strong note-taking techniques and exceptional short-term and working memory.
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication skills with the ability to interpret nuance, register, and tone accurately.
  • Proven adherence to professional codes of ethics, impartiality, and strict confidentiality standards.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.
  • Confident use of technology for remote/hybrid interpreting (video, audio platforms, digital document review).

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience working with diverse client populations, including vulnerable or limited-English-proficiency individuals.
  • Familiarity with regional legal systems, court procedures, and local practices.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple agencies, law firms, and public sector bodies.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to different subject areas within legal proceedings, such as immigration, family, or corporate law.
  • Competence in preparing brief post-assignment summaries or clarifications when requested by clients or coordinators.

Qualifications:

  • Licensed Court Interpretation (LCI) credential or equivalent recognized court interpreter certification.
  • Formal training or certification in legal or court interpreting from an accredited institution or professional body.
  • Advanced proficiency in English and the target language(s), demonstrated through testing, certification, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Completion of interpreter ethics and confidentiality training, preferably focused on legal or court settings.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Languages, Translation/Interpreting, Legal Studies, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory with strong equivalent experience.
