If you are a detail-focused interpreter who thrives in high-stakes environments and values ethical, accurate communication, this contract opportunity offers meaningful and varied work.

About the Role:

As a Contract Certified ASL Interpreter, you will provide accurate, culturally appropriate interpretation between Deaf and hearing individuals across healthcare, legal, and government settings. You will handle a mix of onsite and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) assignments, ensuring message equivalency and conceptual accuracy in both consecutive and simultaneous modes. Your work will directly support access, compliance, and effective communication in sensitive and confidential situations.

Compensation

VRI: $35–$45/hour

Onsite: $60–$85/hour (2-hour minimum may apply)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret between ASL and spoken English in consecutive and simultaneous modes for healthcare, legal, and government appointments.
  • Deliver high-quality interpreting services in a hybrid model, including onsite and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) assignments.
  • Maintain message equivalency, conceptual accuracy, and appropriate register while adapting to diverse subject matter and communication styles.
  • Apply RID/NAD ethical standards and professional boundaries in all interactions, managing role clarity and neutrality.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing available materials, terminology, and context to support accurate and efficient interpretation.
  • Manage confidential information in compliance with HIPAA and other relevant regulations during all interpreting encounters.
  • Collaborate with schedulers, coordinators, and client contacts to ensure timely arrival, smooth session flow, and accurate documentation of services.
  • Use designated remote platforms and technology tools effectively, troubleshooting basic technical issues to minimise service disruption.

Key Requirements:

  • Certified ASL Interpreter (e.g., RID, NAD, or equivalent national/state certification) with verifiable credentials.
  • Fluent, native-like proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and strong command of spoken English.
  • Proven experience providing both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting in professional settings.
  • Demonstrated receptive and expressive interpreting proficiency, including work with diverse signing styles and language preferences.
  • Solid understanding and practical application of RID/NAD ethical standards, including confidentiality and role boundaries.
  • Experience working in high-stakes environments such as healthcare, legal, or government contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy, composure, and neutrality in complex or emotionally charged situations.
  • Reliable access to a professional, private workspace and stable high-speed internet for remote assignments.

Desirable Skills:

  • Prior experience with Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) platforms and remote service delivery tools.
  • Familiarity with medical, legal, or government-specific terminology and procedures.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and multiple service providers.
  • Ability to manage a flexible, contract-based schedule and handle varying assignment volumes.
  • Proficiency with basic troubleshooting of audio/video and connectivity issues during remote sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Current national or state interpreter certification (e.g., RID, NAD, BEI) required.
  • Completion of an interpreter training program or degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Linguistics, or a related field preferred.
  • Documented continuing education in interpreting, ethics, or Deaf culture strongly preferred.
  • HIPAA training or certification, or willingness to complete prior to client-facing work.
