Project: Supporting Adaptive Defence Reforms (SADR)

Timing: November 2023- March 2025

Position: Conflict and Gender Sensitivity Researcher

Level of effort:  Part time: 5-7 days per month

Location: Remote with travel to UK or Ukraine

Reporting: This position will report via the Conflict Adviser into the Programme Director on all technical delivery matters, and directly to Edge Foundation on contractual and billing matters.

Project background and rational

SADR is two-year investment by His Majesty’s Government of the United Kingdom aimed at providing support to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, through a range of technical assistance and capacity building. This will be provided primarily through three core Ukrainian CSO partners, and with the support of Alinea International on technical direction and the provision of international expertise.

The key programme objective is to strengthen defence systems and structures, improve military-industrial governance, and promote civilian security and democratic control over the AFU to help Ukraine effectively repel Russian aggression, counter Russian narrative, and eventually integrate into NATO.

 

Key Responsibilities

Work under the direction of the Conflict Adviser to:

  • Support mapping of relevant stakeholders.
  • Research relevant Ukrainian language sources and provide short written overviews of key conflict sensitivity and gender sensitivity issues.
  • Organise and support interviews with identified Ukrainian and international interlocutors, provide summary material as required.
  • Maintain awareness of programme stakeholders and emerging conflict and gender sensitivity issues as the programme evolves.
  • Prepare draft briefing material to support quarterly, annual, risk, or other reporting as required.
  • Other tasks in support of the project as required and agreed.

 

Required Skills  

Essential:

  • Degree in Gender studies
  • Ukrainian native speaker, proficient in English drafting and speaking.
  • Proven research and organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of conflict analysis and gender issues.
  • Knowledge of Ukrainian Civil Society Organisations.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Ukrainian defence ministry structures and issues.
