JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Process Engineer, Sr. 
DEPARTMENT: Process Plants
CAREER PATH: Expert

SUMMARY: Provides Process Engineering services to the Process Plants, under general direction for complex projects. Prepares conceptual process designs, computer simulations, equipment designs, technical proposals, process descriptions, operating and start-up instructions. Participates in HAZOP studies and leads plant start-ups for complex projects. Supports Sales/Market Managers, Applications Engineers and Operations with their workload on an as needed basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works under general direction
  • Manages large and/or complex projects
  • Screens customer's inquiries to ensure they are in line with company’s capabilities, and contain all information required to submit a quotation. Liaises with sales/customers to obtain any missing information.
  • Collects/screens physical property, vapor/liquid equilibrium and plant operating data required to complete process designs for complex applications
  • Conducts basic process design for complex process applications, including: o Computer simulations o PFD and Heat and Material Balance o P&ID
  • Understands and provides solutions to complex problems
  • Prepares design/operating details for pilot plant studies for complex applications
  • Interprets results of pilot test studies and/or operating data from commercial/industrial plants for complex applications
  • Conducts detailed process design of complex key equipment (columns, Selection of internals, vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, etc.)
  • Prepares equipment/process data/specification sheets
  • Prepares Instrument list with key process data
  • Prepares Process descriptions, including functional design specifications, alarm and interlock matrixes, operating instructions
  • Prepares Commercial and Technical Proposals for complex systems
  • Prepares Commissioning/Start-Up Plans
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, as required in working effectively with internal and customer personnel to interpret their requirements, and resolve problems and issues that arise
  • Recommends areas for R&D in new products and processes/applications
  • Required sound judgement, initiative and decision making
  • Assists in the development of new engineers in quoting/order activities, recommend suitable measures to improve department efficiency, technical knowhow/tools.
  • Check/Review/Approve all the Process deliverables prepared by other Process/Application Engineers, with clearly documenting the Review/approval process.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

  • Registers customer inquiries in the company’s quotation tool/database (Sulprice), and keeps the inquiring data/status up to date
  • Participation in client meetings
  • Preparation of case studies, Presenting technical papers in Conferences as a representative.
  • Responds to questions and inquiries from the customer regarding technical problems and issues that arise and provides related technical support or assistance, in a timely manner.
  • Support to Applications, Sales, Engineering, and Project Management groups
  • Carries out duties of an Process Plants-Applications Engineer Level 3 on an as needed basis
  • Carry out equipment/Plant inspections, attend FAT/SAT as required.
  • Carries out duties of an Process Plants-Project Manager for engineering studies and/or pilot test projects on an as needs basis

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise/support more junior engineers within a project team

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering (Masters’ Degree would be an advantage)
  • Seven (7) to fifteen (15) year’s similar experience, in a related field of Process Engineering (mass transfer/distillation)
  • Ability to interpret customer requirements and to design innovative separation processes and equipment, for complex projects.
  • Analytical capability as required in collecting, reviewing, assessing and interpreting customer’s data and process requirements and developing responsive design specifications and parameters.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills, as required in working effectively with internal and customer personnel to interpret their requirements and resolve problems and issues that arise.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, including word-processing, database, spreadsheet, , drawing software such as Autocad, Navisworks
  • Advanced knowledge/experience of simulation software applications such as PROII, Chemcad or Aspen, heat exchanger softwares such as HTRI or HTFS

TRAVEL: This position will require business travel, including international travel and occasionally for extended periods (during plant start-ups)

  • Participates in PHA/HAZOP/LOPA studies for complex projects
