Automation & Controls Engineer
Location: Westlake, OH
Position Summary
The Automation & Controls Engineer leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes and automation systems. This role provides technical leadership within the engineering team, drives process optimization initiatives, supports advanced manufacturing technologies, and collaborates across multiple functions to improve operational performance, quality, efficiency, and safety. Must have experience in programming or supporting industrial robotic systems (ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Universal Robots, or similar platforms).
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, and optimization of manufacturing processes.
- Manage cross-functional projects involving production, quality, maintenance, and supply chain teams.
- Support automation, robotics, and advanced manufacturing technology initiatives.
- Investigate and resolve complex manufacturing, equipment, and process-related issues through root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and technical staff.
- Collaborate with product development and engineering teams to improve manufacturability and production readiness.
- Develop and execute long-term strategies for process improvement, automation, and operational excellence.
- Evaluate manufacturing performance data and identify opportunities for productivity, quality, and cost improvements.
- Support equipment installation, commissioning, validation, and continuous improvement activities.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Four or more years of experience in manufacturing, automation, industrial engineering, or a related field.
- Experience supporting, troubleshooting, or improving industrial automation systems, robotics, or PLC-controlled equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify, analyze, and resolve manufacturing, equipment, or process issues.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience programming or supporting industrial robotic systems (ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Universal Robots, or similar platforms).
- Experience troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, industrial controls, and automated equipment.
- Experience commissioning, modifying, or optimizing automated manufacturing systems.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies.
- Strong project management and technical leadership experience.
