This role involves analyzing technical documents, performing material and labor takeoffs, and preparing comprehensive cost proposals for piping installations in complex environments.

Role Summary

This position requires a strong command of spreadsheet-based estimating, including advanced Excel skills for creating and manipulating bid forms with complex formulas. The ideal candidate will be capable of developing unit pricing even when limited information is available and will manage full estimates for intricate piping scopes.

  • Perform detailed takeoffs of piping materials, valves, fittings, supports, and insulation.
  • Enter material quantities and labor data into estimating software (e.g., TEKLA or equivalent).
  • Apply labor rates and productivity factors based on established standards for piping systems.
  • Communicate with vendors, engineers, clients, and internal teams to clarify scope and ensure alignment with design intent.
  • Prepare professional proposals with clear descriptions of inclusions and exclusions.
  • Complete all required bid forms and scheduling documentation.
  • Review and obtain approval for estimates prior to submission.
  • Conduct time studies, evaluate change orders, and assist with subcontracted fabrication when needed.
  • Manage workload independently, including overtime when necessary to meet deadlines.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • 5–7 years of experience estimating piping systems, ideally within industrial or heavy fabrication environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret piping isometrics, P&IDs, and architectural drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Bluebeam, and TEKLA EPM (or similar estimating platforms).
  • Strong understanding of unit pricing, labor allocation, and material sourcing for piping components.

Work Conditions

  • May require overtime and occasional weekend work.
  • Some overnight travel may be necessary.
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks efficiently and meet tight deadlines.
  • Primarily office-based with extended computer use.
