Job Description
Our client is seeking a highly experienced and visionary Director of Engineering & Site Lead to establish and lead their Washington, DC engineering division within the aerospace and defense sector. The ideal candidate will possess extensive expertise in aerospace and defense technologies, along with a proven track record of successfully managing and leading large engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the build out of the site to total 50+ employees in the first three years through a close collaboration with HR in recruiting and onboarding, and working in partnership with senior Engineering leaders to transfer expertise to Reston from CMC’s other sites.
- Provide strategic leadership and direction to the engineering department, ensuring alignment with the company's goals and objectives.
- Oversee the planning, execution, and successful completion of engineering projects within the aerospace and defense sector.
- Develop and implement engineering strategies, policies, and procedures to drive innovation, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a large team of engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, manufacturing, quality assurance, and program management, to ensure seamless project execution.
- Develop and manage the engineering budget, ensuring cost-effective utilization of resources.
- Represent the engineering department in meetings with senior management, clients, and stakeholders.
What we are seeking:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, or related field); advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering leadership roles within the aerospace and defense industry.
- Proven experience in leading and managing large engineering teams.
- Proven leadership of a satellite Engineering location and a demonstrated track record of significantly growing a local site through the recruiting and on-boarding of technical staff.
- Strong assessor of engineering talent for technical proficiency and cultural fit.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute engineering strategies that drive business growth and innovation.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in delivering a program through technology maturation, design & development, certification, and in-service phases.
- Strong focus on performance management, quality management and engineering execution and, ideally, recent similar experience in a mid-sized company (200 to 1000 employees).
- Experience working with the Department of Defense, with a focus on C4 (Command, Control, Communication, and Computers), ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) or Space applications.
- Business and financial acumen in the management of a cost center.
