Job Description

Position Title: HVAC Technician
Reports To: Service Manager
Location: Auckland

Purpose:

Reporting to the HVAC Manager, the HVAC Technician will be responsible for diagnosing and resolving service faults, performing routine maintenance, managing minor works, and handling after-hours service calls. The Technician will ensure that all tasks are completed to a high standard, with an emphasis on customer satisfaction, safety, and efficiency.

The role involves providing technical expertise and delivering services to clients in a timely and professional manner. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fault Diagnosis & Repairs:

    • Attend and rectify fault calls at client sites as directed by the Service Manager or after-hours call centre.

    • Diagnose HVAC system issues and perform corrective repairs on heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems.

    • Test and inspect systems to ensure that they meet operational standards and performance specifications.

  • Minor Works & Installations:

    • Carry out minor works, including installing, upgrading, or modifying HVAC systems, as required and directed.

    • Perform system commissioning, ensuring equipment is installed properly and operates according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

  • Routine Maintenance:

    • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on HVAC systems, ensuring that all parts are functioning correctly and meet required performance standards.

    • Replace worn or damaged components, lubricate parts, and clean system components.

    • Ensure all systems are compliant with industry standards, regulations, and manufacturer instructions.

  • Escalation & Reporting:

    • Identify complex issues that require escalation and notify the Service Manager in a timely manner for further guidance or support.

    • Maintain accurate and detailed service records, including timesheets, service logs, and maintenance reports.

    • Submit completed paperwork and reports in an accurate and approved manner, ensuring proper documentation of all service work.

  • Collaboration:

    • Liaise with other contractors, building managers, and customers when required to ensure that all aspects of the work are completed effectively.

    • Work as part of a team to meet the needs of clients and ensure project deadlines are met.

  • After-Hours Service:

    • Participate in an on-call rotating roster for after-hours emergency service calls, ensuring timely response to client needs outside of standard working hours.

  • Other Duties:

    • Perform other duties as directed by the Service Manager.

Health & Safety:

  • Compliance:

    • Adhere to all health and safety procedures and legal requirements, ensuring a safe working environment for both employees and clients.

    • Ensure client-specific site requirements are adhered to when working on-site, maintaining the highest safety standards.

  • Incident Reporting:

    • Report any accidents, incidents, or hazards to the appropriate person immediately, and complete any necessary accident or hazard reports in a timely manner.

Purchasing & Inventory:

  • Procurement:

    • Purchase tools and parts up to $1,000, ensuring all procurement is done in accordance with company policies and procedures.

    • Obtain approval for purchases over $1,000 from the HVAC Manager.

  • Inventory Management:

    • Maintain an inventory of commonly used tools and supplies, ensuring availability for future service jobs.

Key Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as an HVAC Technician, with a solid understanding of HVAC systems, including installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

  • Technical knowledge of heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and system manuals.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to safety standards.

  • Full, clean driver’s license.

  • Relevant certifications or qualifications in HVAC (e.g., trade certification, HVAC apprenticeship).

  • Ability to work outside regular hours as part of the rotating on-call schedule.

Working Conditions:

  • The role may require working in a variety of environments, including residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

  • Occasional lifting of heavy equipment and tools may be required.

  • The job may involve working at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions.

  • Regular travel within the Auckland area is expected.
