• The Process Engineer provides technical support by applying engineering techniques to assist in the improvement of manufacturing processes and products meeting quality, cost and efficiency requirement. This position troubleshoots problems with production and takes corrective action.

      RESPONSIBILITIES

      • Determine the most efficient workstation layout, machines, tools and operations required to develop optimum line balance for sequential operations.
      • Devises and develops the use of substitute equipment, tools and operations to overcome production schedule or technical problems.
      • Plan and design complex production dies, jigs, fixtures, gauges and cutting tools.
      • Develop improvements of special hydraulic, pneumatic and electromechanical equipment. After design, monitors and controls fabrication progress, establishes estimates of time, material and labor costs on projects submitted. Examples of complex projects are those involving progressive dies, machine tool specifications, welding/fabricating cells and acquisition of process developments. Project management methods and reports are used to monitor the projects.
      • Participate in productivity and quality improvements by investigation, analyzing and estimating cost reduction in proposed major changes involving department layouts, methods and operation sequence, machine utilization, tools, jigs, fixtures and the introduction of automation.
      • Investigate availability of special machines, restrictions of work place layout and available facilities prior to estimation material, labor and machine costs. Obtains necessary data from various sources such as research and development engineering, quality control, and material costs required to support specific items of equipment or production schedules. Reviews and directs the integration of this information as facets of cost into bid proposals.
      • Investigate new process technologies. Determines adaptability to facilities and product designs. Prepares specifications, appropriations, and initiates purchases of capital equipment and oversees their installation and implementation.
      • Develop capability requirements and acceptance criteria for new and existing manufacturing processes.
      • Recommend and develop flow layouts.
      • Plan, devise and document engineering information such as operation sequences, materials, machines, equipment, tooling and processes required to manufacture, fabricate, assemble or process electrical, mechanical, sheet metal or non-ferrous components, assemblies and systems of minimum material, labor and machine costs.
      • Review and analyze drawings and specifications to estimate cost of purchased or manufactured components and assemblies.
      • Develop and compile specifications or operating parameters for production materials and/or processes.
      • Conduct analytical tests to determine quality of materials, comparative tests to determine quality of paints or other coating materials and specifications for any materials requiring processing during manufacture.
      • Prepare and document the specifications prescribing the physical or chemical means of pre-treatment for metallic surfaces for effective welding or coating materials.
      • Consult with and advise other functional areas of the plant in the solution of material and processing problems and in the interpretation and application of processing procedures.
      • Contact vendors and manufacturers in the development and investigation of new materials or processes and in determining the application of new or substitute materials.
      • Serve on Product Development Teams advising designs for manufacturing and assembly concepts for new and redesigns of product.
